FSX DX9 performance issues WIN7

Hi there!

I am having a few problems with FSX and Windows 7. Using DX10 preview in FSX gives me fantastic performance with 30+ framerates with most settings set to max. Now, if i uncheck DX10 preview, the performance suffers horribly. Instead of getting 30+ fps i am lucky to get 3+ fps.

I understand that DX10 will run a little bit faster than DX9 because it is more efficient... but the difference should be very small. In my case, it's huge.

My setup is as follows;

Q6600 @ 3.4ghz
GA-EP35-DS3P
4GB Gskill DDR 800
XFX 8800 GT
2 x WD 36GB Raptors in RAID 0
Windows 7 64bit Build 7100

FSX with Acceleration SP2

The same problem occured in Windows 7 x86 7100 too. I have tried clean installs, with and without service packs, different video drivers, all sorts really. Nothing has worked so far.

I've tried all combination of settings under DX9 to fix the problem, but even with everything down low, the problem still persists. The FPS jumps between 3 and 60 fps, it is very erratic and completely unplayable. I have absolutely no idea what is causing this, and i haven't been able to find many other people having the same problem.

I could just continue using DX10 preview, but i have some very expensive payware addons that won't work properly under the DX10 preview.

Any ideas on what the cause is? Maybe even a fix. I would be most grateful.

Cheers,
lapp.

Here is what it looks like.

An Ultralight on the ground at Wellington Airport, NZ

DX10 Preview - ~60fps

Uncheck DX10, restart FSX, load Ultralight at Wellington Airport, NZ

DX9 ~1fps

Yeah looks like you have a problem, but the best way to get a response is to post in the FSX thread at the top of the page. Any FSX user who visits here will have eyes on that thread. Just copy and paste your posts there.

I don't see why this is even a problem for you as the game looks and plays better with dx10, so why even bother with dx9?

A lot of my payware addons are not DX10 compatible, the textures don't draw so all my addon planes are white...

I have 2 suggestions you can try

First is to try using the FPSlimter (DL LINK) unpack the linked file and run the .jar file from it to load the gui link the fsx.exe to a bat file and limit the framerate (in the gui) to 30 then in FSX set your framerate to unlimited this moves the framelimiting to and external app which does a much better job & will stop FSX grabbing hold of every resource in your PC it totally removes the bounce between high/low FPS

2nd suggestion is to try AddonConvertX a payware ulility that converts those hack ass pre sp2 sdk addons into compatible dx10 addons either on the fly of via preprocessing they have a demo for download which is a 10min time limited affair worked for me while i used dx10

hope that helps
