Sound not working when Nvidia driver in use (GTX 260, ASUS P6T Intel X58)
 
Hi,

My PC is an Alienware Area-51 750i X58 with a Flextronics NVIDIA GTX 260, ASUS X58 Motherboard P6T Deluxe, Intel i7-920 CPU@2.66GHz and 6GB DDR3 RAM. My TFT is a LG Flatron M228WD, connected to the PC via HDMI and Line-out(?).

The computer is used with the 64bit versions of Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04. On a freshly installed system the sound works flawless, but as soon as the official nvidia driver is installed and activated, the sound volume becomes so low it's barely audible. This happens both with the drivers shipped by Ubuntu as well as the latest beta drivers 185.18.10. Also tried everything under Ubuntu 32bit, but it's the same there. Cranking up all levers in Alsa Mixer GUI also doesn't lead to satisfactory volume levels. The problem affects the headphone as well, i.e. the TFT speakers aren't the only ones being barely audible.

With the nvidia driver installed, commenting out the line

in /etc/X11/xorg.conf will give me the sound back, at the expense of 3D acceleration. So it's either sound or 3D for me! Why does the activated nvidia driver decrease the sound volume and what can I do against it (apart from disabling it)? Any help would be extremely appreciated!

I believe such an high end machine come with Vista also, does it has the same problem when running windows?

Yes, the machine came shipped with Vista and sound worked flawlessly under Windows.

As a matter of fact, sound does work under Ubuntu too, but when the nvidia driver is activated the volume becomes inaudibly low. Strange!

Please post a full "nvidia-bug-report.log": boot you system, login as user,
then open a shell and login as root (i.e. with "su -") and then type
"nvidia-bug-report.sh". This will generates the log file which hopefully
provides the clues to the fix the problem.

Hi Bernhard,

thanks for your suggestion! The report is attached to this post. (compressed because it exceeds the forum's size limit by 1%) It was compiled unter Ubuntu 9.04 (64bit) with the default Nvidia driver 180.44 installed and running.

It seems that the /var/log/Xorg.0.log included in the report mentioned some incompatibilities with my LG monitor. Since I'm using its internal speakers I'm wondering whether my TFT has something to do with this issue. Unfortunately I have no other monitor/speakers near me to test whether their sound volume drops too.

I just made a crucial observation:

The sound output through my headphones is always comfortably high, with no change whatsoever when enabling/disabling the Nvidia driver. There are two green jacks on my computer, one on the front (for headphones) and one on the back (for my TFT). Surprisingly, with the headphones, the sound is always comfortably high regardless into which of the two jacks it is plugged.

Therefore my TFT (LG Flatron M228WD) seems to be the problem in some way. But WHY doesn't it emit any sound when the Nvidia driver is loaded, whereas the headphones (during the same session and same audio jack) do??

I own an Asus P6T Deluxe V2 (Intel X58) with an Asus GTX 260 graphic card, and sound works. I am running a 64-bit openSUSE-11.1 with KDE-3.5.10. I have my TFT (a 25.5 Samsung) connected via a hardware KVM switch. I do not have special desktop effects nor 3D enabled. I have the proprietary Nvidia 180.51 graphic driver loaded.
