Whats the chance I can get away using a GTX285

Whats the chance I can get away using a GTX285 on my system in my sig. Mind you that the Opteron 185 will be overclocked to 3.0 gig and water-cooled. My thinking is hopefully next year I will be able to build a Quad core system and would like to use a GTX285 in it.

There's no reason you can't 'get away' with it, it's just your CPU might not realise the GPU's potential. Just make sure your PSU can supply the amps ;)

Buying a graphics card now that wont be able to reach its full potential until a year later would be a mistake, You would be throwing money away.

3ghz wont help much.

I'd sell the 320mb GTS (if you can) and get a cheap 9600gt or something in the meantime until you upgrade the rig.

You can actually skip DDR2 ,I'm impressed.

Why you impressed? I thought I ask. But my plans where to get a GTX 280 and still am. I bought a used GTX 260 on another forum but that person rip me off and never sent the video card. :headexplode:

Yeah PSU is important. I had a Seasonic 500w PSU and it was not enough for the 285. While it worked, it would do weird stuff like video dropouts, stuttering, etc. Upgraded to an 850w Thermaltake Toughpower XT modular (figured if I'm gonna spend a lot, might as well get the best) and all problems are gone. I also tried out the popular Corsair 850HX but it was much too large and was not quite as flexible in terms of outputs, nor does it give as much user feedback as the new Thermaltakes. I was able to fit the aforementioned thermaltake in the bottom of a P182 case while retaining the HDD middle fan - good luck doing taht with the corsair! :)

You'll still see an absolutely massive fps boost regardless of the Opteron. Unless you game at 1280x1024 you will be very happy with the upgrade imho

It shows great willpower that you have not been suckered into getting a DDR2 based system and being able to jump straight to DDR3 (which is what you should do If you want it to last as long as the 939)

Fair enough, but by the time it can show its worth (when you upgrade your old rig) the equivalent card will be much cheaper.

Definitely get the GTX 285. You're PSU should be okay as long as you shuffle the rails properly. That card is slightly faster than my 8800GTX SLI setup. I used to use these cards paired with an FX-60 at 2.75ghz. There is a slight CPU hit in games like WiC, WoW, and other RTSes where the CPU is more important than GPU power. In games like COD4 I could scale really well as they are very GPU demanding. If you're planning on running 1920 x 1200 with AA / AF then without a doubt you'll be able to utilize most of that card even on your opty.

A 3ghz opty is right on par with an E6600. It's a little slower than our oc'ed quads but in most cases it isn't going to hold you down so far that you can play anything.

A 9600GT would be a lateral move from an 8800GTS 320MB card. I have a 9600GT KO running at 700mhz and it is slower than both a stock 8800GTS 512MB and an 8800GT 660mhz.

You will see a big improvement with a GTX 285 over a 8800GTS 320bg,but if you are going to get something cheap and faster to hold you over then a 8800GT 512mb would be faster then a 9600Gt You can useally find them for under $80 reconditioned,I found one at tigerdirect for $79 and it was a lot faster then my old 8800GTS 640mb,but I got one that overclocked great 730/1850/2100.If you have a Opteron 185 running at 3gigs you will see probbally double the performance you are getting with a 8800GTS 320mb now.If you can get a GTX 280 at a good price then that will hold you over until next year.newegg has a GTX 280 for $224 with free shipping and most of them can be overclocked to run as fast as a GTX 285 ,but you do save a little on power useage with a 285.Even a GTX260 will give you a big boost in performance and newegg has them as low as $159 with free games. And your power supply sure run a GTX 260.

I'm biased as I only play GTAIV

Re: Whats the chance I can get away using a GTX285

I wouldn't bother with a GTX 285 honestly.

If you really need to upgrade now, get a 260 or 275 and save yourself some money.

Holding onto a card for 3 years, only to do an expensive upgrade 2-3 months before the next major architecture change (for nvidia and ATI) doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
