96.43.13 seems to be instable
Hi all,

I have a Geforce 4 Ti graphics card running on an old HP Server (double Pentium III, 2 * 800 MHz). OS is Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope with a vanilla kernel.

Up to now I have used the legacy driver 96.43.11 with kernel 2.6.29. On July 1st the updated driver 96.43.13 came out, which now compiles on the current 2.6.30 kernel.

I installed the new kernel and the new graphics driver. From that on I regularily experienced freezes of the whole system (Gnome with Compiz), and "regularily" means each and every time I booted/re-booted after 5-10 minutes. On a few occasions also the display got distorted a bit. The system did not even accept "ALT+F1" to change to the console anymore, so I always had to press the reset button for reboot.

At first I thought that the new kernel would be the problem. Thus I went back to 2.6.29, but sticked with the new graphics driver 96.43.13. But the system continued to freeze regularily, exactly the same symptoms !

I went back to the older graphics driver 96.43.11 and the problem is gone, as before.

So it seems that the changes from 96.43.11 to 96.43.13 might not work flawlessly.

Anyone else experiencing this behaviour ?

Re: 96.43.13 seems to be instable
hi, I am upgraded to Debian/unstable 32bit (after a hard disk crash); I am using kernel 2.6.30 and XOrg 7.4 ; I have a GeForce4 MX 440 ; I compiled and installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.13-pkg0 ; but it does not start; the X log ends with

0: /usr/bin/X11/X(xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x81316cb]
1: /usr/bin/X11/X(xf86SigHandler+0x51) [0x80c1e01]
2: [0xb7fa6400]

the full log is available inside http://bugs.debian.org/545228
