UNDERclocking my P4 prescott (aka presc-HOT)
I've been using my retired gaming station as a server lately. The processor is quite powerhungry, and I tried to underclock it, by lowering the FSB speed.
Then it wouldn't even boot. Do I have to adjust some other settings as well? Does the lowered FSB stop other parts from working? I dont have the option to reduce multiplier. It's lowering FSB or not at all. Specs: CPU: P4 Prescott 3.0 GHz MB: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe |

What have you done to the voltages / timings and other stuff when lowering the fsb?
Is there a virtual bios one could look through? |
Re: UNDERclocking my P4 prescott (aka presc-HOT)
It's worth checking other buses when you underclock the FSB. Your PCI-E bus, if you have one, should run at 100mhz, PCI bus at 33MHz, and AGP at, I think 133MHz. If your FSB underclock is knocking any of them out of their usual speed, that could well cause issues. Whatever you do though, you still might find it better just to sell up that CPU, RAM and mobo and move to a more modern kit. In Britain, you can buy an E5200 (2.4GHz, dual core) for around £40, a suitable board with onboard VGA (which in itself iwll save you a good few watts over an add-in card) for £30, and 2GB of DDR2 RAM for around £20. It might be worth checking out to see what you could get, and how much you can potentially save.

I'll fumble around in the BIOS first ... I guess I can try to change the ratios for the others, and see if that works.

Re: UNDERclocking my P4 prescott (aka presc-HOT)
Prescott's just suck, in the true meaning of the word.
Why don't you lower the FSB just a little bit? Or why don't you set a lower multiplier? Not that it will help you much, these things still eat plenty. |
Re: UNDERclocking my P4 prescott (aka presc-HOT)
Dude... a prescott is not what you want to be using as a server proc. Even underclocked it's gonna rape your power bill if you leave it on 24/7.
You could get a Intel brand 775 mainboard (Intel is the best for reliability), RAM, and a low power E3300 for very cheap. Probably like $100 if you get the right deal. |
