Using KDE 4.3. If I run glxgears without compositing, I get ~17.4k FPS. When I enable compositing, glxgears stutters horribly, but says it goes at 5k FPS. Why is performance totally killed when compositing is enabled? I have an 896mb gtx260 which should be more than enough for this...here comes my xorg.conf if it makes any difference (also am using 190.36 drivers, but this issue has been with older drivers as well):

You can not measure performance with glxgears. The numbers mean nothing.
Use a benchmark or a game to compare the performance instead.

Ok. I ran the CS:S stress test. 84.99 w/o compositing, and 79.87 with. That's much more of what I'd expect.

So why does glxgears suck so much with compositing? Is it simply outdated or something? Just wondering.

Something else I noticed: w/o compositing enabled, smooth scrolling in firefox is great, but w/ compositing enabled, it is terrible. Is this a driver bug or a kde bug?

I find it annoying when anyone refers to glxgears!

Because it simply draws to many frames so that any slight overhead can have a massive effect like that.
