composite video in for editing - how in Linux

I have a number of 8 mm videos from a older Sony camcorder I would like to save to DVD and remove blank spots etc.

I had purchased a instant dvd device for Windows years ago but computers were so slow and software so prone to crash, this was supposed to move data to USB port.

From what I've read Linux only seems to accept via "Video in" cards . But how to know if your card accepts video in, or has drivers.

According to my system information I have a Geforce FX 5700, I see it has
s-vhs port

I assume all are for Video out. What is recommendation for a 2nd Video card for Video in - or other method of receiving Composite in video?
