VDPAU and Composite option....

Hi all,

What's the current situation w/ VDPAU and the Composite option?

Is it still considered a no-no? I thought I remembered reading that it would work, starting with the 180.60 driver? I'm running 185.18.36 (Ubuntu Karmic), and and tearing seems to be greatly reduced (eliminated?), but, with compositing enabled, running something like MythTV fullscreen, the gnome window manager taskbars on the top and bottom of the display, are still visible. MythTV will not cover them when it runs. Running w/ Composite option disabled solves the problem.

Any thoughts, anyone?

With the exception of tearing, VDPAU has always worked with Composite either enabled or disabled.

With the release of 185.19 (which is actually the driver release before 185.18.14), tearing with composite enabled was significantly reduced. For many users, tearing is completely eliminated. However, unfortunately, tearing still persists for many users. Whether you experience tearing or not will depend on many aspects of your system setup, GPU workload, etc.

Finally, the issue you're having with MythTV and the Gnome task bars is unrelated to VDPAU itself.

Hello Stephen,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, tearing seems much reduced, perhaps even eliminated.

As to the problem w/ MythTV not covering the Gnome task bars when compositing is enabled, you're saying that this is an issue w/ MythTV and the compositing option, and would occur regardless of whether VDPAU is used?

Thanks,

-Mark

Had another thought:
After I thought about it for a moment, it makes perfect sense that this issue has nothing to do with VDPAU, since VDPAU is all about decoding and displaying video, and this problem crops up as soon as you run a windowless/borderless application like MythTV.

I just tested with XBMC, and it doesn't have a problem covering the Gnome task bars, so, it seems that this is a MythTV problem, not an NVidia driver problem.
