Daily Xid errors immediately after upgrading stable Ubuntu Jaunty x64 to Karmic

2 Attachment(s)
Ever since upgrading my very stable Jaunty x64 install to Karmic, I've started getting daily crashes. I'm not an expert, so I don't know if this is X.org crashing or what. I'm using the default version Karmic NVIDIA drivers (185.18.36), and I have a GTX 260 card. I'm using kernel 2.6.31-16-generic and X.org 7.4+3ubuntu10.

Here are the symptoms:

-- kern.log and syslog report NVRM Xid 13 errors (often with Xid 8 errors too) at time of crash
-- often, the screen will flicker and then my mouse will freeze/unfreeze and then the screen will become garbled. Sometimes I'm able to click on items in the top panel and restart, but oftentimes the GUI is unresponsive. I usually have mouse control.
-- sometimes the system will freeze without a garbled screen, and the mouse will usually freeze too.

-- all crashes happen when I'm actively using the system, never at idle.
-- all crashes happen daily or near-daily.
-- uninstalling/reinstalling drivers doesn't fix the problem
-- all this happened only after upgrading to Karmic. Since this was my first time upgrading a Linux system, I kept things like the previous linux-headers and linux-restricted-modules.
-- uninstalling the proprietary NVIDIA driver seems to stop the crashes.

Here's a sample of the errors that I get:

****I have several more Ubuntu system logs that I can make available upon request. I chose not to include them here, hoping that the NVRM Xid message (which is largely the same) and the two nvidia bug reports are enough. The nvidia bug reports only show the latest crash or two, as I had reinstalled the nvidia karmic drivers prior to producing a log file.

I don't think anyone here (except the nvidia dudes) has reliable and detailed information about what Xid errors are, how to further diagnose them and how to get rid of them.

You might try different drivers and/or Xorg versions, maybe you get lucky.

I know, but I'm here to try to get an explanation, or for them to at least tell me if it's the nvidia driver, X.org or what.
