X fails to start a few times before "really starting"

Hello. I have a Toshiba Satellite A500 laptop with an GeForce 230M inside.

Running Arch Linux x86_64.

My issue is that when I try to start X, it fails to start a few times (flashes back and forth to VT), before actually starting. This causes issues with GDM's autologin, and to be honest it's quite annoying (X can take up to 30 seconds to start).

I tried this with Xorg 1.7 (I updated to Xorg 1.8 along with the latest beta drivers from nvidia, same issues).

HOWEVER: The 190.53 version (patched for 2.6.33 kernel) doesn't have this issue for me.

Does anyone else have the same problem, or better, does anybody have a suggestion?

Posting my Xorg.0.log as attachement, is there any other log file that would be useful?

Thanks

Hi,

I have a Samsung R560 with a GT9600M.

I see the same behavior with my Debian 64bit system and newest drivers.
Usually it only fails one time before it starts the GDM login screen. I do not use autologin so I can not tell if this is the reason for the multiple fails.

Unfortunately I am not at my notebook at the moment to provide any log files. If needed I can post them later. Just let me know.

Greetings

Yes sometimes it will fail once, but most of the time it'll be two.

I just re-installed arch on this laptop for an other reason (switching filesystems), and still have the issue.

This could be the time-out of gdm(/kdm/xdm). It attempts to restart X if the server didn't come up within N seconds. Look for some gdmrc config and increase that time-out.

An nvidia-bug-report.log would be useful. You can generate this by running "nvidia-bug-report.sh" as root.

If you could create one for the failing 195.36.XX driver, and another one for the 190.53 driver, that would be helpful as well.

That indeed solves X trying multiple times. It now starts on it's first try! Thanks!

I attached a report log for 195.36.24, I'd have to downgrade xorg to 1.7 to create one for 190.53, since this one doesn't support xorg 1.8

I've read this: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=563624

Is there something that slows down the loading of the GLX module in the 195.36.xx versions of the Linux nvidia driver? It was pretty fast in 190.50.xx.
