Detect Displays does not work
I have the latest driver 195.36.24. Whenever I change the monitor, the old monitor infomation is still displayed in the Nvidia X Server Settings window. For example, if the graphic card is outputting 1980x1080 on 1080p monitor and I connnect to a 720p monitor, there seems to no way to autodetect the new monitor without rebooting. I've tried it with Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Linux Mint. The default driver when Linux Mint is first installed, actually worked.

The only solution I can find so far is to restart the X Server. Is this a known issue with Nvidia proprietary drivers for Linux?

Yes, it's a known limitation. I can't promise a timeframe, but it's on the list of things to be fixed eventually.
