Unable to set resolution beyond 640x480 9800GTX+ VX2235wm OpenSuSE 11.2
 

I just did a fresh install of OpenSuSE 11.2 due to a failed hard drive. I ran the one-click and installed 195.36.15, but couldn't get a kernel to build. So I downloaded the latest driver 195.36.24 and ran the install by hand...

After running nvidia-xconfig and hours of research and tweaking, I'm unable to get a resolution to set beyond 640x480. A detailed X startup log reveals that the driver thinks that the panel's native resolution is 640x480. An earlier version of the driver under 11.2 before my drive crash did not have this problem; I had happily used it at native 1680x1050 resolution for 3 years.

Quick update... I backed down to the version I was running before the disk crash, manually installed 195.36.15 and it works fine. I upgraded, same problem. Downgraded, and the driver is unable (unwilling?) to use a higher resolution with my VX2235wm than 640*480. My HP f1905 didn't have a problem with the new driver. Odd...

I have the same problem with a 7900GS and Viewsonic VX2235WM monitor. This is the same monitor as the original poster.

I'm running twinview so the configs won't be the same... if you need me to back-out my twinview and just use the same config please let me know and I'll make some time to get the updated logs with a config the same as when I had the problem with the new driver

Thank you. Does the problem go away if you comment out the 1680x1050 ModeLine entry in xorg.conf?

Under the new driver I tried this file as well as a blank file with all sorts of settings; commenting out the 1680x1050 mode line didn't work, as it complained that all resolutions were too big for the 640x480 "native" resolution of the panel. Backing down to the revision of the driver I was using before the rebuild makes it work just fine...

You appear to be running 195.36.31

I have had success on OpenSUSE 11.2 (x86_64) with both NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.35 and now NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53. I suggest that you try either one of those. The 32-bit version of 256.53 appears to be available for download on the nVidia drivers page, so I suggest that.

Thanks. Yes, I am running 195.36.31. It works fine on my primary system which is x86_64. I've been using kmod-nvidia from rpmfusion and they don't have the 256.53 release packaged, yet.

Maybe I'll be adventuresome and try installing from the nVidia download... maybe not.

I also had some conflict difficulty with the built-in nouveau driver. Some googling helped me disable nouveau - I don't remember off the top of my head how I had to do it...
