New Xorg 1.8 and nvidia-173.xx support.

Will nvidia-173xx support the new 1.8 xorg?

Yes. xserver 1.8 support is in, but it needs to go through testing. We'll try to get an updated driver out soon.

That would be great !

I've been testing openSUSE-11.3 milestone releases (with LXDE desktop) on a PC with a relatively old nVidia FX5200, and since the change to the 2.6.34 kernel (and xorg 1.8.0), with the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.25 graphic driver installed, I need to start X window with:
Code:

startx -- -ignoreABI
I'm looking forward to an update to the 173.14.25 to address this. Many thanks for the support.

This made 173.14.25 and my fx5200 do their job on a ubuntu 10.4 amd64 system with lucid's standard kernel 2.6.32-22 too. Txl :)

But I did not find a way to put this option into startup scripts; would be nice until the updated driver is out.

You can add
Code:

Section "ServerFlags"
 Option "IgnoreABI" "1"
EndSection

to your xorg.conf

gave me a blackscreen.

In the meantime I removed a bleeding edge ppa and downgraded to standard ubuntu lucid's xorg 1.7x - every thing is working fine.
so, cause I am no coder I'll wait for the driver update before I go unstable again.

Anyway tx for your suggestions, always helpfull for going deeper into this linux world.

X.org server 1.8 is not "alpha" material. It is a stable release. Ubuntu should not be calling something that upstream considers stable, alpha. You should invest your time in a distribution that cares about upstream instead of spitting on it.
