I came from a HD5870 that was running 1Ghz / 1.3ghz mem 24/7 and all the benchmarks I had run with both cards confirm what you are seeing. Although I run my CPU at 4.2Ghz and 1680x1050 so the lead was even bigger...add to that I now run the GTX 480 at 875 /1750/2000 so it especially smokes the HD5870!!

Mail, what temps are you getting and what is your cooling like? You have a pic? Was thinking about pulling the trigger, work got me a $100 gift cert @ amazon.

The GTX 480 is faster than the HD 5870. I think we've known that for a while now.
The 5870 doesn't scale linearly when overclocked either. |

Uploaded with ImageShack.us Well mine is water cooled. Highest load temp I've ever seen was 50 and the room temp was about 83f that day. Normally load temp is about 44-45. Even though the GTX 480 is faster, the HD5870 was a lot smoother. I really miss that. Been thinking about going back. Framerates are nice but when games don't feel smooth it doesn't really matter. This card reminds me of my experience with the 9800GX2, it benchmarked great but real world gameplay was just poor. Eventually I returned it and just went back to my 8800gtx. It was slower in benchmarks but games were so much smoother. Im considering a 120Hz LCD to see if the GTX 480 would be smoother or just buying another HD5870 and selling this. |

Mail, that's weird, because supposedly the higher min frames should mean a smoother operating experience. And others have pointed out that the 480 seemed smoother to them above the 5870.

Re: ASUS GTX 480 beats ASUS HD 5870 Matrix 2GB GDDR5 @ 950/1250 !!!
Not really a great comparison when one costs 30% more than the other. Try putting two 5850s against one 480 and see how the results pan out(price-wise pretty much the same).
The 5870 is much closer to the GTX 470 in both performance and price than it is to the GTX 480. |

I'm riled up about the OP posting so many damn screens instead of just doing up some nice concise bar graphs :)

So why is it ok to compare a 480 to $100 more expensive setup but not ok to do the same with the 5870? People compare the 480 to the 5870 because it's the fastest single gpu card from both companies. |
Re: ASUS GTX 480 beats ASUS HD 5870 Matrix 2GB GDDR5 @ 950/1250 !!!
Actually the 2 GB 5870 is the same price as the GTX 480. The price premium is because it has quite a lot of customizations, overclockability, etc. So pricewise it is a fair comparison. This one doesn't support six-display eyefinity which I thought was the whole point of the 2 GB cards.
What this review proves is that you might as well get a stock 5870 if you want to go that route and maybe overclock it yourself because you aren't going to squeeze out that much more performance. Additionally, it would be more interesting to see numbers at a higher resolution where you'd normally run into VRAM limitations. 1920x1080 is too low to test that. |
