VESA/NVIDIA conflict
I have come across a problem using the nvidia driver under slackware linux. The driver is:

I am running kernel

My graphics card is a GeForce 210 with hdmi output.

My problem is that I run graphic applications both under X and under a console using VESA support.

After power up my VESA applications run perfectly. After starting X using the nvidia driver and later stopping X, my VESA applications do not work. I conclude that the nvidia driver alters the state of the graphics card so that VESA is no longer supported until the next power cycle.

I have verified this by using the open source nv driver instead of the nvidia driver. After exiting from the nv driver VESA applications run normally.

Unfortunately for me, the nv driver frequently crashes firefox and is thus unusable with the GeForce 210.

I hope someone can suggest some way that I can restore the graphics card to the state it is on power up.
