Latests openSuse 11.3 unable to install any nVidia driver

Just getting such information:

Quote:

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build
the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or NVIDIA GPU installed in this system is not supported by this
NVIDIA Linux graphics driver release.

Please see the log entries 'Kernel module load error' and 'Kernel messages' at the end of the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for more information.
Kernel 2.6.34-9

You need to blacklist the nouveau driver

Open the file with the command below

kdesu kwrite /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf

At the bottom of the file add the line

blacklist nouveau

Once that is done reboot and you can install the nvidia drivers.

Re: Latests openSuse 11.3 unable to install any nVidia driver

The idea is right but unfortunately, blacklisting nouveau doesn't work.
There are plenty of things forcing it to be loaded.

Quote:

nouveau 504763 2
ttm 56600 1 nouveau
drm_kms_helper 29507 1 nouveau
drm 181769 4 nouveau,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 5804 1 nouveau
button 5713 1 nouveau
And removing nouveau by force ends with complete display blackout.

Works for me.

has worked for me on two separate machines with different hardware in each one.

It appears that blacklisting doesn't prevent module from being loaded.
Manually I can load any module from the blacklist.

Nouveau driver is loaded by bootsplash (my guess)

Add moseset=0 to your kernel-commandline.

Re: Latests openSuse 11.3 unable to install any nVidia driver

Do you mean
nouveau.modeset=0

I did. Module compiles now without any complains but X server crashes claiming that there is no usable screen.

Nouveau driver is still present in lsmod list even after blacklisting it and adding extra option to grub.

I had to remove options related to bootsplash to get system boot up into X.

So, this is partially solved.

Have you reported the problems to the developers mailing lists so that the issues can be worked out before the final release of 11.3?

Re: Latests openSuse 11.3 unable to install any nVidia driver

OK,
the thing is related to MS7 (and probably further versions).
It is fault of KMS (Kernel Mode Setting).
To bypass it you need to add nomodeset to the kernel boot command line.

Blacklisting the module is also recommended.
