GeForce 210 fails with 195.36.31 & kernel 2.6.32-21|2.6.32-22

Good day,
I'm trying to install the nVidia Linux driver, version 195.36.31, on Ubuntu 10.04 i32 (Lucid Lynx).
I've tested the installation against the kernel version that shipped with the distro (2.6.32-21) and 2.6.32-22.

On both kernel versions the nvidia.ko kernel module loads, but when I attempt to launch the X server the process fails. The following error is logged by syslogd:

NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x27:0x28:1094)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

I've made sure that I've deinstalled the nouveau package and blacklisted the module. Also, some threads suggested that "vmalloc=256M" should be added to the GRUB default cmd line. I've confirmed that the size is increased when I 'cat /proc/meminfo', but that doesn't help either:
VmallocTotal: 524288 kB
VmallocUsed: 34920 kB
VmallocChunk: 480892 kB

It does seem asif the PCI ID is correctly detected, if I compare the bus id in xorg.conf with the value from lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210]
(rev a2)

Solution: Reverted back to nVidia driver 195.36.15

I've attached a bug report of the working system as well. Maye there is something in there that can shed some light on the issue of why 195.36.15 works and 195.36.24 & 195.36.31 doesn't work for GeForce GT218 (GeForce 210)

Hm. It has to be an Ubuntu specific problem. I use Debian Squeeze with the 2.6.32 kernel and have a Gf210 - it works well with all drivers i tried on it (190 series - 256 series).

Have you blacklisted nouveau + disabled kms in the boot menu? Because if kms is on, the nvidia driver fails.

Re: GeForce 210 fails with 195.36.31 & kernel 2.6.32-21|2.6.32-22
Good day,

In /etc/modprobe.d/ there is a nvidia config file, that blacklists the nouveau driver.
I've tried to add a "options nvidia modeset=0", to disable kms, but the nvidia
kernel module claims that it doesn't recognize that option.

I've tried kUbuntu 10.10 (maveric meerkat), running the 2.6.35 kernel, with the latest nvidia-current (260.19.12) and still no luck. The NVRM error remains :(
Some posts also suggest that the allocated virtual memory isn't enough, and by adding
'vmalloc=192MB' to the kernel boot paramaters solved the problem for them. This doesn't
make any difference for me.

I'm now at the point where I'm going to buy an ATI Radeon and be done with it. nVidia used to be the only cards that I'll look at, but if they're not going to support their cards, then I don't see why I need to be loyal either.

I've tested a nVidia GT250 in the same machine, without changing the configuration, and that works 100%. It seems to either be a hardware problem on the nVidia 210, or the drivers doesn't support it properly.
