Debian Squeeze X crashes with nvidia drivers

1 Attachment(s)
So, this is my last chance i guess, that my problems could ever be fixed.

Every time i do a coldboot the x-server crashes, after a reboot everythings fine. Tried with nouveau and proprietary nvidia(with kernel cmdline nouveau.modeset=0 and blacklisted nouveau). Free "nv" driver works without problems.

Code:

inxi -G:
Graphics:  Card nVidia G84 [GeForce 8600 GT] tty res: 271x69 Gfx Data: N/A for root user
inxi-S:
System:    Host home-of-squeeze Kernel 2.6.32-5-686 i686 (32 bit) Distro Debian GNU/Linux squeeze/sid

Tried with:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.35-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.15-pkg1.run (installed now)
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.31-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.29.run
nvidia-kernel-dkms (with and without sgfxi)

For what i have tried so far and to see the logs please ping to http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.p...6d7b14ee5fd6e0.

Any help would be very appreciated!!!

Attached bug report after error occured.

Re: Debian Squeeze X crashes with nvidia drivers

I've experienced the same X.org crash on 9200M.
I have to restart kdm manually and then it starts.
Tried with latest 3 drivers You've mentioned.

That looks a bit odd. Are you sure your board&BIOS is ok?

I have a nvidia G210. I've tried the nvidia drivers with ubuntu 9.04, 9.10, 10.04, debian 5.04, fedora 13, all with kernels from 2.6.31 up to 2.6.34. All options: nomodeset, pci=noacpi, biosirq, noapic, acpi=off, setting in xorg.conf Option "NvAGPA" 0, 1, 2, and 3. I think that hundreds of trials, but I did not succed in making it work. Now I'm with kernel 2.6.31, I could not run the nvidia-bug-report when running X, because it do not start, but I submit the nvidia-bug-report.log.gz.
Please, I do not know what else to do. I'm thinking in buying an old nvidia card so I can use the 173 drivers. I know that they work because I have one computer at work with this configuration. I'm dessesperate.
Thanks in advance.

The G210 works well under Debian Squeeze (testing) and Ubuntu 9.04/9.10. At least for me. Use the latest drivers (256 series).

Yes, I'm using 256.35 driver, but I can not make it work. Probably it also has to do with the hardware. It's a medion 7241, and they only supports win7. The bios is american megatrends, but very simple. I can only adjust very few parameters. It has two sound devices, one intel, and the second the nvidia from the nvidia card, and I do not know if there is a problem between both with the same module.

Nevertheless, now I'm running nouveau, but for this I did not need a nvidia GPU card.
I'll wait a couple of months to see if this problems stabilizes.
BTW, I've upgraded the kernel to the last 2.6.34, and the problem is similar, black screen only responsive to SysReq REISUB.

A lot of work has been going on inside Debian for Nvidia driver support.

OpenCL is now supported and dkms will auto install 195.36.24-4 for ia32 and amd64 architectures.

You can install from nvidia-kernel-source if you like as well, the debian way.

If you have this added to your /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ftp.oregonstate.edu/debian sid main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.oregonstate.edu/debian sid main contrib non-free

you'll pick up all those packages.

I just filed a request for the latest release, which will get done very shortly, now that there are three members supporting nvidia.

My card: Nvidia 8600GTS 256MB Ram

Packages installed:

nvidia-libopencl1-dev
libcuda1-dev
libcuda1
libcuda1-ia32
nvidia-libopencl1
nvidia-libopencl1-ia32
nvidia-opencl-common
nvidia-opencl-icd
nvidia-opencl-icd-ia32
nvidia-vdpau-driver
nvidia-glx
nvidia-glx-ia32
nvidia-kernel-2.6.32-5-amd64 [195.36.24-1]
nvidia-kernel-common [20100522+1]
nvidia-settings [195.36.24-1]
nvidia-kernel-dkms
dkms

The bold ones will get nvidia installed on your system.

Re: Debian Squeeze X crashes with nvidia drivers

I don't know, but at some point I had to boot with
intel_iommu=off
to make the graphics work on a new i7 system. Maybe that'll do something.

Well thanks for the input guys. Unfortuanately none of these hints worked.
Finally i set up ubuntu 10.04 with the latest 256 driver available, but the problem persists - see the attached bug report.

Hope someone could help.

[EDIT: Main Question for me is WHY does it crash on the first boot and WHY does it work after an immediate reboot without problems...]

Re: Debian Squeeze X crashes with nvidia drivers

I am also having a problem with debian squeeze X crashes, but only on an x64 system. Nearly identical setup on x32 is working. And it only crashes when using CRT-1 only for output. If I use CRT-0 send to both CRT-0 and CRT-1 it doesn't crash.
