NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 vs. ATI Radeon HD 5870

I can get these two graphics cards for roughly the same price. Which one should I go with?

For the same price? 5870 absolutely.

From what I have read, the 5870 will out perform the 470 in most games...and it probably runs cooler.

Voted for the 5870 cause its faster and runs cooler. If you are into 3d vision or Physx though you should probably go for the GTX470.

The 5870 has lower power draw and performs as well or better than the GTX 470. If you are building a new machine, it will keep some other costs down as well as you won't need as powerful of a power supply, and you won't need as good of a case with lots of cooling to keep it cool.

In your position I went with the 470 because I didn't like the idea of not having the most feature rich card (PhysX, 3D vision, GPGPU focus, etc.).

It looks like the Inno3D GTX 470 is a really nice overclocker if you don't mind a card that takes up three slots. http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=25123&page=1

When you overclock it as much as Hexus did (comes at default clock) the gap between it and the 480 is really small. And it seems to run much much cooler. Not sure what's the price on these and how available they are but if they're around the same price as a 5870 I think it's still definitely worth considering.

The only issue I see with that is I haven't found a game yet where I've used PhysX and could actually tell it did something. 3D vision sure if you have the glasses and monitor. I could see the advantages of using a GTX 470 for F@H though, but I'd probably just stick with the HD5870 anyway since it can also run F@H.

I posted this same question on the Rage3D forum and, while most voted for the HD 5870 in the poll, the thread contains a heated discussion as to which is actually better. Some are saying that once you start to overclock the GTX 470 and the HD 5870, the GTX 470 starts to pull ahead of the HD 5870.

Have a look (and let me have your feedback in regards to this!): http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33965057

Both cards have identical performance. Concerning overclock, Fermi has much better oc scaling.

For me ATI is just good alternative, so i would choose GTX 470.

Never mind. I already posted that elsewhere.

when you look at this new review ,the GTX 480 and the HD5870 run neck in neck in games useing fraps with real wold results, and the Min frames on the HD5870 does'nt look as bad as I have seen other reviews. All the cards wre running at default speeds, once you overclock the GTX 480 it will pull ahead father.http://www.techspot.com/review/283-g...adeon-hd-5800/
