X freezes in some circumstances
1 Attachment(s)
Hi folks,

I encountered an error with the nvidia drivers (currently 256.35 but also with the previous version after a downgrade).

As far as I could discern this, X will freeze, if the card has a little bit too much to do. For example starting a game through Wine, starting VirtualBox or just switching between Metacity and Compiz (although, I can use Compiz as default window manager without freezing).

The log files will fill with something according to the following (more to see in the bug report)

Jul 16 17:35:06 antares kernel: [ 1180.628088] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 8, Channel 00000004
Jul 17 16:09:32 antares kernel: [13589.026019] NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! 0x12:0x2b:1671)
Jul 17 16:09:32 antares kernel: [13589.026029] NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

Thanks in advance for any hints, help or pointers in the right direction to get things running again.

Re: X freezes in some circumstances
Ok, slight update. X doesn't freeze completely. It just lags a lot.

It seems, that the following error codes resemble some kind of time out

[58776.317552] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 8, Channel 00000003
[58785.317554] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 8, Channel 00000004

If I am patient enough, I can kill the offending program and X returns to the normal state.

Re: X freezes in some circumstances
It seems, that I just have to restart the X server, to get things working again.

Although this seems to be another problem. In some circumstances restarting X will result in a black screen, while the computer tries to restart X with the following messages added to the kern.log file

[13589.026019] NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! 0x12:0x2b:1671)
[13589.026029] NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

The funny thing is, that everything works quite nice, as long as I don't start anything else. For example I can play a game right after the X login. But if I start another program, like Firefox and/or Thunderbird, things will go haywire.
