BCM4312 wireless card

Ok...I am starting a new thread about this because it is a tricky thing to get working. I am BY NO STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION AN EXPERT on getting this up and running, but I figured that I will try to help out anyone that may have issues. First, I will explain how I got mine to work:
  • rmmod b43
  • rmmod ssb
  • zypper remove b43-fwcutter
  • echo "blacklist ssb" >> /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
  • echo "blacklist bcm43xx" >> /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
  • echo "blacklist b43" >> /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
  • echo "blacklist ndiswrapper" >> /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
  • zypper in broadcom-wl
  • zypper in broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop
  • modprobe wl
  • reboot

Let me know if this helps. ;)

Re: BCM4312 wireless card

I found these instructions as well:
  1. Install build essentials with: sudo zypper in -t pattern devel_basis devel_kernel
  2. Download the package compat-wireless from http://wireless.kernel.org/
  3. Unpack the package somewhere: tar xvzf compat-wireles.tar.gz
  4. Enter in the new directory, and execute: make && make install
  5. Wait for a while, and when it ends should say something like “do make unload” DON’T DO THAT.
  6. As root exec: install_bcm43xx_firmware, this script should be in your system path, but only as root. This will download the firmware to /lib/firmware/b43.
  7. Reboot. I found that its more safe to do a clean reboot than write make unload, because i got a kernel panic if i do that. So reboot and your wireless card should be working now with b43. Remember to remove the WL driver so you don’t have conflict between them.

Thanks for posting this Doc - will post results - hopefully from my newly working bc, when I get home tonight.

Here's another page (This one looks pretty easy to do):

Alright - time to update. And I feel bad about this as you went to all the trouble to post these..

Option 1 - everything went smoothly, no errors, wl refuses to scan for a network and the device isn't showing. Appears the Os still can't see it.

Option 2 - make results in multiple error 1 and error 2 outputs, which google shows as common with this chipset.

Thanks for the thread DD, but i need to find better options. Back to google.

Re: BCM4312 wireless card

Ok, this is getting frustrating. lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 shows the BCM4401 ethernet controller and the BCM4318 Network controller - the latter being the main concern.

I'll have to put together a list of everything I've tried so far, but I cannot get the OS to even see the device.

Grrr....this is frustrating. I was sure that this would solve the problem.

Have you tried another wireless card? Do you have another router you can try?

Card, yes, router - I only have the one. But I have confirmed it works fine using windows.

I'm going to undo everything I've tried and start from scratch. I really think the BCM4318 is turning out to be the problem. Most tutorials and tips I've found mention several cards, but never that particular one.

Figures

Re: BCM4312 wireless card

Posting from my working bcm4318.

My Lord - never again...

My fix -

Reinstall Ubuntu

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

Activate via System>Admin>hardware Drivers

reboot and configure connection.

Nothing I did would make this work in OpenSUSE....

Have you tried this repo?

grey_1 07-27-10 08:41 PM

Re: BCM4312 wireless card

Not sure Sean - is that off the "other" list in OpenSUSE? If so I may have.

I'll tell ya though, I'm just happy it's working at the moment. If I get the urge to try OS11.3 again I'll make sure to add that one.
