Network/Lan benchmark wanted. Any Input?

I'm looking for a way to benchmark my transfer speed on my home network. I need something other than SisoftSandra to do it. Anything come to mind?

Set up an ftp server on one of the machines and transfer files back and forth.

ftp is a protocol with very low overhead. It is a good way to test speeds.

Hmm... Very true sir... never thought of doing that. Should give some pretty accurate results.

Make sure you set it up to get and upload files LOCALLY, and NOT through the internet through the shared connection!

It is an easy mistake to make.

no it's not :)

Also take into consideration that 100mbits/sec = 12.5 MB/sec
My transfer rates are around 10 MB/sec. The 2.5 MBs I lose because of the router and the firewall.

Kinda seems pathetically slow compared to 100...

Many n00bs would be disappounted.

maybe because mbit doesnt equal Megabyte :o

you using a switch d1rX, or just a hub?

netviper13 07-30-02 01:39 AM

The improvement when moving from a hub to a switch with a 3-computer network is incredible.

I now enjoy speedy file transfers with either of the other two computers on the network thanks to my purty Linksys 5-port 10/100 Switch.

..duh

Yes, switches make a very big difference.

I used both, not a lot of improvement though. I was thiking of getting new switch, but I would have to link it with my hub anyway and those transfers will be the same as on the old one heh
