Tearing with vdpau even though composite is disabled

I've gotta say that I think vdpau is pretty fantastic. I'm watching blu-rays by using makemkv to stream to xbmc. I can also stream to mplayer but xbmc is much more user friendly. I've been unable to stream to smplayer or xine.

When watching blu-rays either in mplayer or in xbmc I see tearing near the top 15% of the screen. I have composite disabled in xorg.conf and here is what gets reported in the Xorg.0.log file:
Code:

$ grep -i composite /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(**) Extension "Composite" is disabled
(II) Initializing built-in extension COMPOSITE

I'm using nvidia-drivers-195.36.24 on Gentoo.

Vdpau is fabulous. If I could resolve this tearing problem, it would be perfect.

BitJam,

Could you please try the latest driver; 256.53. There have been some bugs and resource leaks in previous versions which might cause your issue.

If that doesn't solve your problem, or you can't try a newer driver, can you please run the following commands:

export VDPAU_NVIDIA_DEBUG=3
mplayer -vo vdpau somefile.xxx

... and paste the resulting log here. That will hopefully tell me why the overlay presentation queue isn't being used.

Thanks.

Re: Tearing with vdpau even though composite is disabled

I've upgraded to nvidia-drivers-256.53 and the tearing seems to have gone away or at least gotten much much better. Thank you!

There is a strange problem now with mplayer (version 1.0_rc4_p20100803). When I use -vo vdpau, upon exiting, mplayer changes my twinview metamode! I suspect this is a bug in mplayer and not vdpau. Here is the Metamodes line from my xorg.conf:
Code:

Option          "MetaModes" "DFP: 1920x1200 +0+0, CRT: 1600x1200 +1920+0;  DFP: 1920x1200+0+0, CRT: NULL; DFP: 1280x800+0+0, CRT: 1024x768+1280+0"
When I exit mplayer it forces me into "DFP: 1920x1200+0+0, CRT: NULL;". It tells me it is "Returning to original mode 1920x1200".

Funny thing is that if I mplayer -vo vdpau $FILE in that metamode then it crashes with a segfault:
Code:

VO: [vdpau] 1920x1080 => 3840x2160 H.264 VDPAU acceleration  [fs] [vm]

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: decode_video
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.

PLMK if you want me to create a new thread regarding this issue. For me, I'm planning to just steer clear of mplayer and smplayer and use vlc and xbmc instead.

The MPlayer maintainer just told me that "-vm" is not supported in this configuration.

For future bugreports, please post complete, uncut command line and output.

Thanks for the reply Carl. As I said in my previous post I'm planning to steer clear of mplayer and smplayer for now because they both seem really broken when using VDPAU. PLMK if you want me to start a new thread on this issue.
