big Video Card Problems

HI there,,im running Ubuntu Lucid, on a Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT.
It seems that when i install any of the hardware drivers on the list that it gives me they dont work, when i reboot the pc it takes me to a black screen resembling terminal, and i cant boot back into normal ubuntu. it seems it messes up the drivers and i cant find a way to restart x server successfully, so i have to completely reinstall ubuntu each time.
i need a way to install a working driver, if not i cant run any effects or any of that cool stuff. HELP!!!!!!

Be sure to fully update your Ubuntu before installing the Nvidia drivers. Then reboot your PC and then install the drivers. Also, you will need to tell us which driver version you are using exactly.

If you have the same problem after doing the above, please check that /etc/X11/xorg.conf uses the Nvidia driver.

Otherwise, generate a new xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig, copy it into place and reboot.

Re: big Video Card Problems

It would probably be a good idea to install the nvidia drivers through an .deb package, either the Ubuntu official ones or through a PPA. This way, the kernel module will get automatically updated when a new kernel is installed.
