260.19.21 & Dell XPS M1330: no smooth playback on 1080p

I tried version 260.19.21 on a Dell XPS M1330 laptop (GeForce 8400M GS). On 1280x800 my 1080p files play fine, but if I connect the laptop through HDMI to my TV with 1920x1080, then it seems to loose every other frame. The movie looks like an old animated cartoon.

Moving to 16 bit display depth did not help. I also tried disabling the internal TFT, but without luck.

Can anybody reproduce this? Did I miss some option to increase memory size for the card?

Any helpful comment would be highly appreciated.

Hi,

I also have a 1330 with NVIDIA graphics, and now Full HD Vids don't play.

Code:

[vdpau] Failed VDPAU decoder rendering: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_video_mixer_render: An invalid handle value was provided.
A:  3.2 V:  3.2 A-V: -0.030 ct:  0.056  0/  0 21%  3%  3.0% 7 0
[vdpau] Failed VDPAU decoder rendering: An invalid handle value was provided.
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_video_mixer_render: An invalid handle value was provided.
A:  3.2 V:  3.3 A-V: -0.023 ct:  0.053  0/  0 21%  3%  3.0% 7 0
[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_video_surface_destroy: An invalid handle value was provided.

This happened somewhere around 193.xx, worked well with 256.xx and happens now again.

Any ideas?

Attached you can find the usual log file and the output of the bug report script. Hope this helps.

it looks like the whole 8xxx series is screwed in vdpau decoding since 260 (at least 8400 and 8600)
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=155618
in my case even 1080p videos on 720p doesn't work well. 720p videos work well in place (just because the decoding goes at 34fps which is enough for most videos, while 1080p decoding at 15fps is unusable)

Am I correct that this is completely unrelated to the mplayer.log you posted below?

Note that MPlayer is bad at displaying videos at the exact frame-rate of the screen you are using, so if your video is 23.976 fps and the screen 23.976 (or 24) Hz, frame drops (and A/V desync if you are not using -framedrop) have to be expected.

There are at least a patch and a fork that claim to fix this problem, Carl Eugen

(I suspect this is unrelated to "loose every other frame"?)
You forgot to add that VDPAU stops working the moment you press "f" to change to full-screen mode. (or am I wrong?)

How long has that mplayer git fork been around? Kind of sad that I didn't know about it. What a difference it makes! Only bad thing is looping doesn't work but who cares.

Indeed, this happens sometimes.

The log files belong to my first post on this thread.

Using the same mplayer on my Revo (Nvidia Ion) connected to the same TV there is no such problem.

Do you think you could send me a pointer to this patch? Any hint would be highly appreciated.
