Help me choose a graphics card!

Hi all,

So I'm doing my *third* build for a friend (snowball effect FTW!), and we've come to the point where we are choosing the graphics card. We are looking to be able to play the following games at good settings (i.e. as good/better than what you can get on a PS3):

- Borderlands
- BioShock 1/2
- Left 4 Dead 2
- CoD: Black Ops

The candidates are:

- Radeon 5670 1GB
- Radeon 4850 512MB
- GeForce GTS 450 1GB

We do not care about DirectX 11, since no card in this price range will give good frames with it, anyway. So, what's the best choice here? Looking at the specs, the 5670 sucks (400 stream processors versus 4850's 800), but I may be missing some architectural subtlties that are not immediate from the newegg page.

Thanks!

I don't know your exact budget, but GTX 460 are on the egg for less than $150 after rebate.

A few more dollars for much, much better performance and features...

just my .02

EDIT: I just linked the Asus model, others are even a little less.

+1

The GTX 460 is a PRIME card right now. Excellent P/P ratio.

Like grey said, put a few more dollars and you'll get a 460, less power consumption, more CUDA cores and if you don't really care about DirectX 11, it's good to go (plus 336 cores is far better than 192, almost double the ammout for a few more dollars).

Anyway, anything better than a 7800GTX (the kind of architecture the NVIDIA RSX in the PS3 comes from) might do the trick.

In this case, the overall rule of thumb could be... if your friend is in need or wants some PhysX in his/her games, NVIDIA all the way. Otherwise, choose between the AMD offerings. Any of them will give him/her plenty of fun with any game you toss at it.

here's a product comparison of the gts 450 vs. gtx 460 just to show you the difference these guys are talking about.

Another vote for the GTX 460 1GB. Yes it's more, but you'll be more future proof with that card which should save money in the long run.

We ended up going with a 4850. Minimizing cost was a huge priority of his, and after seeing my roommate's X3 445 + 4850 setup, he deemed it "good enough".
