GT420M not working

Wow what is going on with NVIDIA. I have always bought NVIDIA based laptops and desktops.

My recent purchase was the Dell XPS 15 - I first looked and yes it had a GT420M NVIDIA chip and 1080p.

I even checked the "supported" section in the latest drivers release for the GT420M - and yes its there.
So I thought I was good.

I installed linux and the latest binary drivers. X windows wont start.
it says no screens found.

I dont care about battery usage or anything as for my purpose the laptop is plugged in when I am using it.

I just need X windows to come up?

Is this possible with GT420M under linux or not?

Please help.

Jerry

Optimus enabled laptops are not currently Linux compatible, see the big thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=144750

Looks like that laptop is Optimus-enabled [1], which AFAIK is currently not supported by the binary nvidia graphics driver [2].

So "HOW": can the release page say GT420M is supported under linux????

If I cant get X windows running with their driver - how can that be listed. I thought
I did all my homework and now Dell is saying there is a 15% restocking fee.

I am stuck.

I cant even get VESA mode to do anything.
I'm shocked... been using NVIDIA for 18 years and now I am forced to find another solution.

I cant believe they didnt require a BIOS option or something to disable this insane idea.

Yeah, caveat emptor when bying new Nvidia-based laptop intented to run Linux these days...:( Hope there will always be non-Optimus options available in the higher end laptop ranges. Otherwise my next laptop will not be Nvidia-based. And yes .. Stuff like Optimus should be controllable from BIOS (i.e. option to disable COMPLETELY or select which graphics chipset to enable), to ease the situation for OS-es other than Windows.
