AaronP, can we get GPU switching support *WITHOUT* Optimus support?

I understand Nvidia doesn't want to implement Optimus on Linux, but can we at least have the ability to turn off the Intel GPU and enable the Nvidia GPU?

That's impossible, because the nvidia card has no physical outputs. So you can't get around driving the intel card, because the only way to get a picture out is via the intel card.

Optimus is not about switching GPUs.

The hard part should be the ability to switch back and forth between the two seamlessly. It should not require much effort on Nvidia's part to create a setting where the Nvidia GPU takes control of the output at boot and keeps it. They just need to patch the kernel to make this decision via a kernel parameter at boot.
