After Driver Installation Screen Sleeps on Ubuntu10.10 Geforce 7600GS

Hello,
I'm having problems with nvidia driver for linux 260.19.44 I installed the driver according to the http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=57368 guide without any errors (just pre-installation failed the rest was error free.) and when I start gdm after installation the screen sleeps. I read the "how to install guide" in this forum it is nearly the same procedure. My system runs on Ubuntu 10.10 and graphics card Geforce 7600GS. I've been trying really hard for 3 days now nothing works for me.:( I attached nvidia-installer.log
please help me.

can you switch to a VT via CTRL-ALT-F1 .. F6 ?
run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root in that console and attach it here afterwards

edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and modify the lines as:
Quote:

# HorizSync ....
# VertRefresh ...
.....
# Modes "1600x1200"....
can you only leave monitor 1 connected ( either the CRT or the Phillips 170p ) ?

i think the driver tries to get 1600x1200 on the 17" Phillips that can only do 1280x1024

I think you might be right because system seems to work with no errors however I made the changes you advised but it didn't help. The monitor(Phillips 170p) goes to sleep. Perhaps I couldn't do the exact edit you said. I make those three lines comments by putting # before them right? And I didn't understand what you meant by "can you only leave monitor 1 connected" I don't have such thing as CRT. The only one I have is Phillips 170p

oh, strange that it says... nevermind then,

leave Modes line as it is without #
but remove "1600x1200"

That didn't help either the screen sleeps just after I start gdm=S

it is the same with 270.30 =S I attached the bug report and installer.log of 270.30 hope it helps.

I just don't understand I tried editing xorg.conf various ways. I wrote Busid "PCI:1:0:0" , in device section, tried deleting 1600x1200, added the lines #Load "dri" and #Load "GLcore" in module section. And tried all the combinations with these.

I am now running on a driver called "vesa" I also attached the working xorg.conf as xorg.log

thanks

Re: After Driver Installation Screen Sleeps on Ubuntu10.10 Geforce 7600GS

can you move xorg.conf from there and start X without it?

Re: After Driver Installation Screen Sleeps on Ubuntu10.10 Geforce 7600GS

I did what you asked. The screen(the console as appeared in ctrl+alt+f1) flashed a couple of times but x didn't seem to start. Then I had to stop gdm and put xorg.conf to where it was and start x again in vesa.

p.s sorry I replied a bit late. I was not in town for a couple of days.

ok, so without a xorg.conf file, start X in debug mode as http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678 ( -logverbose 6 ) instructed and after it settles, switch to a VT ( CTRL-ALT-F1 ) log in as root and run nv-bug-report.sh
