nvidia 270.30 random screen flickering

With 270.30 my screen flickers at random when using KDE, Gnome or XMonad. 3D applications doesn't influence this behaviour, it's completely random.

dmesg shows xvid errors:
Code:

I can confirm this. I have Geforce 6200A-LE (256mb ram, 64 bit), openSUSE 11.4 x86, KDE 4.6.1, NVIDIA 270.30
Code:

NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 6, PE0000 0400 ff446145 0000fcf8 ffffffff fff7feff

Same for me runnign Ubuntu Natty amd64 on a DELL XPS m1330 laptop with a nvidia 8400m.

I think this only occurs with an external monitor attached. I am not sure though.

I have the same problem...

Re: nvidia 270.30 random screen flickering

Maybe i should mention that my keyboard is unresponsive while this heavy flickering occurs.
I tried to switch to strg+alt+F1 but nothing happened at first.

After a while the flickering stopped and my display switched to that strg+alt+F1 console.
I then switched back to the xserver (F7) and everything continued as normal.

summary:

-flickering is happening at random times, maybe only with external screen attached
-keyboard stops working
-mouse moves, but clicks are not recognized
-xserver/driver seems to recover after some time (~1minute)

Re: nvidia 270.30 random screen flickering

I don't think that it is because of external display. I have only one CRT monitor (Siemens Nixdorf MCM 171V).

That happens here too, i hope nvidia fixes it soon

Code:

[  9023.706] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
You could try recompiling the x server. Change QUEUE_SIZE in mi/mieq.c to a larger value, I'm using 4096 and haven't seen that issue for a while.

Ok, maybe this only happens with "normal" monitors and does not happen with only laptop lcd used. Perhaps some refresh rate related thing? Vsync? *brainstorm*

For me it is like:

Only laptop lcd: ok

Laptop lcd+external projector: flickering

Re: nvidia 270.30 random screen flickering

I've seen this happen on my laptop on both Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 with the 270.30 drivers. I usually have an external LCD monitor plugged in via HDMI.

Re: nvidia 270.30 random screen flickering

Here is a related launchpad bug.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/751047

They consider it to be a nvidia-graphics-drivers bug.

Re: nvidia 270.30 random screen flickering

It certainly is a nvidia graphics bug. In Ubuntu 10.10, the flickering never happens with 260.19.44 but it does with the 270 series drivers, so it's a regression. Unfortunately I can't install 260.19.44 in Ubuntu 11.04 because it's not compatible with xserver 1.10.
