Windows from any application turn black when too large

hello, if any window/application is too big, all i get a black screen, but i can somewhat do tasks within the application (clicking buttons, etc).

nvidia 270.41.06-1

xorg-server 1.10.1-1

example here: http://www.majhost.com/gallery/mrsat...ackwindows.png http://www.majhost.com/gallery/mrsat...gnomeshell.png
this happens on desktop environments and window managers.

distribution is Arch Linux, and that's all i can provide right now...

downgrading xorg does not seem to help

If you turn off desktop effects, do you still have the problem?

This looks like something that used to happen to me a few years ago using compiz, and it turned out that the desktop effects caused the video memory on the card to be used up.

I never see the problem now, but I have a lot better card with more video memory now also.

What card do you have, and can you tell how much video memory is on it?

hi! i have a geforce 6150se nforce 430, 256MB of video ram, i never had this problem before, and sorta, i get the issue on regular gnome 2.32 without effects and on openbox, but disabling direct rendering on KWin solves the issue, but i really want better transparency on KDE..

I thought this was a KDE-only problem. This happens to me too.

I currently have a GT240 with 1GB of video memory. No way the memory gets filled.
I will try to disable direct rendering to see if the problem disappears.

I got the same problem, what OS are you running?

I'm on Fedora myself and I started to see this behavior with the introduction of the 270.xx driver range. I tried Fedora 14 and Fedora 15, both had the same problem. Downgrading to older nVidia drivers solve the problem but I am now running the Nouveau drivers because the F15 kernel is too new for the 260.xx drivers. Else I would be using the proprietary drivers. :)

On a side note, I already sent an e-mail to linux-bugs@nvidia.com (which I never received a reply on, by the way) with a screenshot and information as stated in http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678

[edit] Wasn't reading too good, I see you're using Arch Linux.

Hi, thanks for the reply. All distributions I encountered with nvidia 270.xx available seem to have this problem. I can't seem to downgrade to the 260 drivers without using a newer kernel :(

Exactly. That's why I started using Nouveau drivers again. By the way, the type of card I'm using is an on-board controller:

00:12.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C68 [GeForce 7050 PV / nForce 630a] (rev a2)

And DeiF seems to be using a GT240 1GB, what card do you've got yourself?

I have a geforce 6150se nforce 430, 256MB, I'll guess I'll use the Nouveau drivers again, I don't know how much they've improved since the last time I used them. we'll see :)

Well, at this point all I can say for the Nouveau drivers in Fedora 15 is that they are doing an awesome job. I've seen no problem with my everyday use so far. I even got them desktop effects enabled! :)

I'm glad to see you've got a different card. I guess we can conclude that there at least problems with the 6xxx, 7xxx and GT2xx cards / chips. It would be nice if more people have this problem, then we know at least that it's a serious problem. :)
