XServer freezes on start using nVidia 270.xx drivers on Geforce 9300 IGP

2 Attachment(s)
I have a ZOTAC mini itx 9300 motherboard with integrated GeForce 9300 graphics which has worked very well on all previous nvidia drivers. However there's no joy with this latest release. On updating my Ubuntu to 11.04 I am now no longer able to boot the xserver with the nvidia driver installed. I can boot with the nouveau driver as expected. Steps to reproduce my problem on my PC:

1. Install Ubuntu 11.04 --> Boot's fine into desktop using nouveau driver.

2. Run 'sudo apt-get install nvidia-current' and then 'sudo nvidia-xconfig' --> driver installs as normal and compiles kernel module.

3. Reboot with new driver isntalled --> Boot hangs at splash screen.

I have also tried installing the same driver, 270, in 10.10 to see if it is 11.04 specific, but I got exactly the same result. X fails to start.

I used ssh to log in and run nvidia-bug-report program. The script hangs but hopefully the information it provided is still enough. I am also attaching the output of demesg, which shows the panic and call trace.

Let me know what other info I can provide. Any help is appreciated! :)

Matt

I have the exact same problem, please post a solution when you find one.

Same Problem here in Ubuntu 11.04, I tried it also in Archlinux -> Same Problem.

See also Bugreports on Launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/748396
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...au/+bug/790822 (is not about nouveau)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/771594
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/770559

Tried 275.09.04 and 270.41.19 .. all got these problem with Zotac 9300.

Please Fix it!

I don't use Ubuntu so this could not be the case here.

I had problems with Suse and the Nvidia drivers and this was related to KMS. Disable KMS and blacklist Nouveau. Maybe this helps on Unbuntu too.

Re: XServer freezes on start using nVidia 270.xx drivers on Geforce 9300 IGP

No, this bug is not KMS related, just tried it in Arch.

Nvidia Kernel Modul crashes at startup wheter kms is activated or not.

@matthewbpt which distro with which version of nvidia driver do you use?

You all are stating X server with startx from remote shell like ssh, telnet OR from Virtual Terminal (VT) ? I faced this kind of issue when i startx from remote ssh through putty application.

No, just normal boot with Ubuntu or Archlinux.

(I tried it on both distributions, same problem on both.)

Re: XServer freezes on start using nVidia 270.xx drivers on Geforce 9300 IGP

Question: Is it somehow possible to use 260.x.x drivers with Xorg 1.10? I compiled & installed them and move around the complaining of the XServer with -ignoreABI, but it does not work. Does someone has a patch for it?

Try the 275 beta, that should solve the issue.

I run into this when I tell the system to switch to runlevel 5 ( # telinit 5) -- I've mailed all the info to linux-bugs, and I'm using the very same hardware as the OP.

Note that the same thing happens with 275.09.04, and with any kernel I've tried so far.

Re: XServer freezes on start using nVidia 270.xx drivers on Geforce 9300 IGP

As you see here the same thing happens on Windows 7 x64 .. install newest nvidia drivers -> BSOD.

But it seems to be only on x64 on Windows 7 .. did anyone try a x86 (32bit) linux instead of x64? Maybe it's also only a x64 problem in linux.
