I only just bought it recently too. but Im pretty sure I bought it while it was on sale on steam so not too annoyed.

The free version is not the same as the paid version. The paid version has single player and some people have mentioned they think the textures are better in the paid version in MP. I can't verify the different textures though.

They're probably releasing this to build up a larger fan base for when Arma III comes out. Great idea really.

First run a sale on the original game a few times (I got the complete package on sale months ago) and then release a slightly watered down free version to scoop up all of the users who may have been on the fence about buying the game. All in all with this strategy they should definitely have more people eagerly awaiting Arma III.
