Dell Precision M6500 - Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M - Unusable with Gnome3

Hi,

with last driver 275.09.07 and all others previous drivers Gnome3 desktop it is unasable... sometimes when there are a lot of windows X crash with black screen and i can't use yet console.

It is seems that video card go to a concurrent problem and in fact on X log it is visible this error

60.638] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x00002524)
67.574] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x00002524)
67.637] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed detecting connected display devices

This driver is unusable, when i work often this happens but unlucky black screen happens random so i don't know as could be reproduce normally... but happens very often.
With kde black screen happens with less frequently but i think that this is a very block bug that doesn't permit to use my laptop.

Please, fix it asap.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm glad that I have found someone wit VERY similar problems.

I have Dell Precision M6500 with nVidia Quadro FX 3800M, I use Ubuntu (I tried 10.10 and 11.04) with GNOME 2, I tried many different versions of nVidia drivers (right now 280.13 I got from PPA, but I also tried 275.19, 275.09.07, 260.19.36). I also had my graphics card replaced 4 times, motherboard 3 times and screen 3 times. But the problem persists. Every now and then my screen goes black (without even backlight) but the system sometimes works (one time I listened to the music for over 15 minutes). This blackout usually happens when I user gnome-terminal with midnight commander and I'm scrolling down some text (as in view file and then use down arrow), I can trigger this error with 95% chance. In general programs which output much on the console in a short time are very "dangerous", for example subversion checking out repository with many small files or glxinfo. Recently closing Liferea usually triggers that blackout too.

After such crash I can find one of two different things in X logs:

1. 95% chances for something like this:
[ 57569.194] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d47c)
[ 57576.194] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d47c)
[ 57576.194] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed detecting connected display devices
[ 57587.197] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 7, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d4d4)
[ 57594.197] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 7, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d4d4)
[ 57597.198] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 7, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d508)
[ 57604.198] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 7, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d508)

2. 5% chances for something like this:
[214280.825] (II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 280.13 Wed Jul 27 16:55:26 PDT 2011
[214280.825] (II) NVIDIA Unified Driver for all Supported NVIDIA GPUs
[214280.825] (--) using VT number 8
[214280.828] (EE) No devices detected.
[214280.828]
Fatal server error:
[214280.828] no screens found

It doesn't seem relevant whether I use Compiz or not and with what settings. When I tried nv driver there we no problems with stability. Under Windows 7 I can play Witcher 2 for several hours straight without any problems, the same is for Half-Life 2 or Fallout 3/New Vegas so I doubt it's the hardware. But then again running Firefox and/or Thunderbird under Windows can thigger the very same error. Under Linux running 3D application also doesn't trigger this error, I tried for example Unigine Heaven demo.

I attached some of my recently caught nvidia-bug-reports.

Do you have any scenario that is likely to trigger this error? Are you using Windows and also observe similar problems?

Hi,

in my cases i always see scenario 1.

[ 57569.194] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d47c)
[ 57576.194] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d47c)
[ 57576.194] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Failed detecting connected display devices
[ 57587.197] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 7, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d4d4)
[ 57594.197] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 7, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d4d4)
[ 57597.198] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 7, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d508)
[ 57604.198] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 7, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000d508)

I don't use windows. I hate it. :)

Bye

p.s. currently, i can work with my laptop and linux with nouveau open driver kernel drm v.20110602 and x11 driver xf86-video-nouveau-0.0.16_pre20110323. I hope that in the future i can use nvidia driver with vdpau and cuda support.

Hi,

Now, after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot I'm using nouveau with Gallium 3D and haven't seen black screen for about two weeks now (which is really comforting, I can work now). So it's not hardware. Or maybe hardware, but only this part of it, which is used by nVidia drivers only.

I wish nVidia responded to my bug report I sent them a while ago...

Re: Dell Precision M6500 - Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M - Unusable with Gnome3

hi all,
i have the same laptop running fedora 15 & 16 and had the same problem which was in addition to the "... fallen of the bus" one. the problem occurred immediately with gnome 3 using external monitor that was hooked to the displayport. the problem happened once in a long while in kde & windows 7. there was no problem when i used nouveau (nouveau is no go for me since it does not support displayport) which made me think that only nvidia driver that uses all hardware feature triggers the problem. the fact that it happened also with windows made me think that the hardware is the problem. i called dell and asked them to replace my video card. now i have a new card and everything works fine. no problem for the last 2 weeks in gnome 3. so my suggestion to you guys is call dell and ask for a new video card.

Re: Dell Precision M6500 - Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M - Unusable with Gnome3

Hi,

Maybe I'll try once again. Now I'm running on my fourth (4th) graphics card, third (3rd) motherboard and third (3rd) display. Dell replaced those parts for several times, but almost everytime they did it it didn't help. I admit that once they replaced something and my problem was gone for about month on nVidia drivers, but then it came back. I honestly gave up. Right now everything seems to be working (on nouveau) and I have to think if I'll take the risk.

Re: Dell Precision M6500 - Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M - Unusable with Gnome3

Hi,

i confirm that issue still open with driver 290.10 with same error:

[ 241.961] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000088c)
[ 248.961] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x0000088c)
[ 251.962] (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0xdfff2fff, 0x00004a74)

To reproduce it is only needed do this easy steps:
1. start gdm with gnome3
2. login
3. execute glxgears

after 1/2 secs laptop monitor go to power off and i can't restart my system.

Same problems with or without vsync, etc.

Please, how can i help you to identify where is problem on the driver with nvidia quadro fx ? I think that some functions aren't thread safe and multi core system and so on my laptop where there are 8 core i catch soon this issue.

Is obviously a driver error because same software version with a nvidia gtx 250 (driver 290.10) and gnome3 works fine without this problem.

I'm a developer and i want only use my video cards with all its features. Is there a way to help you through test applications that could be simplify debug process? Is there a way to receive sources files and try to debug this issue from my self?

Thanks

Same problem here.

Re: Dell Precision M6500 - Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M - Unusable with Gnome3

I also have a Dell m6500 with 16Gb and a Quadro FX 2800M running Fedora 16 with Gnome 3 and currently using the kmod-nvidia-3.1.6-1.fc16.x86_64.x86_64 driver.

Try this: In the nvidia-settings set the “Antialising Settings” to “Override” and move the slider to “Off”, also uncheck “Texture Sharpening”.
This is a per-user setting saved in ~/.nvidia-settings-rc

What driver versione do you use ?

I try with Override antialiasing but same problem. When glxgears start after 1 sec monitor go to poweroff.

Currently I use drivers 290.10.

Can you post your xorg.conf and .nvidia-settings files?
