top or htop for the GPU?

I'm trying to troubleshoot some playback issues with my 8400GS. Well, I guess the first question is if the 8400GS has enough power to playback 1080@24 bluray? This is the first time I've attempted to play back a .mkv rip of a bluray (Voyage of the Dawn Treader) in Mythtv. Every few seconds I'd get dropped frames and audio dropouts.

During playback the CPU idles at 1000Mhz (it's 2800Mhz at full speed) and via top Mythtv takes about 8% CPU time.

I'm going to try upping the scaling_min_freq to 1800 to see if that helps (AMD processor so I'm not sure if the bus speed is being reduced with the CPU clock).

Then again, should I pick up a passive cooled 430?

Thanks!

Re: top or htop for the GPU?

Code:

nvidia-smi -a
should supposedly show GPU load, but this functionality was broken many released ago at least for my 8800GT GPU.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it shows "N/A" for anything relevant.

Yep, NVIDIA decided nvidia-smi should only work on selected professional GPUs.

I guess someone with a knowledge of assembler can hack this binary so that it doesn't check the GPU it runs on so that we could see all available information.
