[bug report] 275.19 makes Gtk apps go into infinite loop when quitting, breaks Gnome

1 Attachment(s)
After upgrading to the 275.19 driver, many Gtk+ and Gnome applications fail to terminate and go into an endless loop, using 100% of the CPU. For me (I am using Gnome 3), the applications affected are gnome-session and gnome-settings-daemon. Other people have reported similar problems with blueman, fusion-icon, gnome-terminal, lxterminal, and sakura. See https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=375615 for details.

The fact that gnome-session and gnome-settings-daemon are affected is particularly critical: it makes it impossible to log in with gdm-3 (which starts a gnome-session process of its own). Even if you use another login manager, gnome-session going into an infinite loop when terminating makes it impossible to log out of Gnome.

When connecting to one of the affected processes using gdb and getting a backtrace, it becomes clear that the Nvidia driver is the culprit:

Code:

# top
PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S %CPU %MEM    TIME+  COMMAND
17515 gdm      20  0  415m  29m  17m R  100  0.4  3:49.47 gnome-session
17522 gdm      20  0  548m  33m  22m R  100  0.4  3:49.65 gnome-settings-
[...]
# gdb -p `pidof gnome-session`

    stack_end=0x7fffc3c59b18) at libc-start.c:258
#7  0x000000000040d341 in _start ()

And indeed, downgrading to the 275.09.07 driver fixes all problems.

Potentially relevant information: my card is a GeForce GTS 250; I am using Gentoo (~amd64), kernel 2.6.39, gcc-4.6.1, glibc-2.13, xorg-server-1.10.3, with gtk+-2.24.5 and 3.0.11.

I'm also hitting this bug after upgrading from 275.09.07 to 275.19. I'm unable to log in with gdm-3; after I type the password, the login prompt disappears and nothing else happens. I can switch to console, but I am unable to kill any of the processes related to the desktop (Xorg and all gdm processes), even with SIGKILL. If I try to SIGTERM Xorg, it deinitializes fine, but the process never exits (presumably because it is not waited for by the frozen parent?).

I'm attaching a bug report file, but it was made after I reverted the driver to 275.09.07.

This bug just made me angry. I've literally spent the past two days trying to figure out why a clients computer would not login with gdm-2.32 and won't logout and has many non-responding applications. Grrrrrrr........ At least the next time I use my own computers that have nvidia cards I'll know how to avoid this issue. :headexplode: Now I know what I need to do to get the all of the Zombie processes out of my own computer that I've remote logged into.

I've tested the 275.21 and the 275.19 driver and both are affected by the zombie gtk processes. The bug is occurring on multiple nvidia cards. The currently affected cards include:

GeForce 8100 / nForce 720a
Geforce 7600GT
Geforce 9600GT

You can add "nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] (rev a1)" to that list. Took me couple of hours to figure out what broke gdm/gnome 2.x for me :/

have the same problems with gnome-system-monitor and synaptic

GeForce 8600GT and the 280.11 driver, 280.04 did not have the issues

I also have that problem

Geforce GTX 590

beta drivers 280.11

with 275.09.07 the prob is gone.

It does appear that everyone is on Gentoo and running xorg-server-1.10.3.

I have now included the nvidia-bug-report files from each system. Two of the systems are on the non-buggy driver but all exhibit the bug with nvidia-drivers 275.19, and 275.21.
