How long will the long-lived branch be supported for?

Hi,

I currently package and maintain nvidia driver releases for Red Hat Enterprise Linux for the elrepo.org repository.

I recently noticed your long-lived branch currently supporting the 275.xx series drivers.

Please could you advise roughly how long you intend to support each long-lived branch, and how many supported long-lived branches there are likely to be at any one time. Where will End of Life notifications be issued for long-lived branches (previously it's been obvious as each new series release deprecates the previous release, but that will no longer be the case). Obviously such a concept has merit within the Enterprise arena so we are keen to support these releases for our users.

Thanks for your continued support of the Linux community.

Phil

Hi Phil,

Thanks for asking. There's no set schedule for when the current long-lived branch will change, as it depends primarily on new system platform support (e.g., motherboard chipsets) and new GPU architectures. Our goal is to have at most 2 per year. Generally, support for the current long lived branch ends when a new one is available, but we will make exceptions for critical issues.
