X79 is a major disappointment
Just helped my dad build an X79 rig with the Extreme processor.
32 GBs of RAM did not work with the board, so it only sees 24. Corsair's Vengeance isn't supported for 8 DIMMs yet so we'll have to wait for a BIOS update. Probably should have gone with the G-SKILL as the ASUS board seems to support it for all 8 DIMMs. USB 3.0 support and SATA 6 Gbit/s support doesn't cut it for this day and age. It should have all been USB 3.0 and all SATA 6 Gbit/s. This must be the half-assed attempt to making something better. So the real question is...will there be an X89 soon with Ivy Bridge? |
Re: X79 is a major disappointment
Not to mention that these chipsets will have around a 10month or so delay after the newer stuff comes out. What ever happened to having both the highend and lowend come out at the same time.
So when you finally do get your ivy bridge E, haswell will be 4 months away. |
Re: X79 is a major disappointment
And Haswell will probably use a different socket.
What's with Intel changing sockets every year? I might as well wait for Haswell to build a new rig for myself. I'm not missing much by staying with my X58. |

Re: X79 is a major disappointment
I just built a x79 on an Asus Pro board with a 3930. It does recognize all (8) 32 Gig of Vengence Memory. It does work really well with an SSD, 500 Read & Write. It overclocks like a Banshee.
Did not like having to buy a Corsair H80 for a cooler which works OK,Better than what Intel wants to sell you. 30C Idle & 53 C Stress. Asus should have included the cable for the front panel usb 3.0. I moved from a Rampage 1366 990x to this setup. The 990 is very good but this is better, really can see a difference in the smoothnes of my games. Not overclocking the cpu or memory (Mem 1600) I get right at 18000 with Aida. The AMD 6990 vid card will put out about 29000 to 30000 on 3dmark 2006. (1280x1024) Have no regrets, can't speak on how it goes up against a Z68, never tried one. |

Re: X79 is a major disappointment
X79 is a great platform for people who need 6 core. Ivy bridge is coming for x79 LGA2011 socket as well so it is not dissapointment. As far as SATA6 goes, honestly useless. I have Raid 0 2xSSD running on Sata2 and it smokes.
