Dell XPS-17 702 GT 550M initial configuration error "No Screen Found"

2 Attachment(s)
All:

need xorg.conf file for two monitors, now I get no video and error, no screens found.
replacing or deleting the original /etc/X11/xorg.conf gets X to start but no support for external monitor via HDMI.
I have commented my xorg.conf file to help others.

Please review my attached debug file and comment on what is needed.

Scientific Linux 6.1, kernel updated to 2.6.39.4 from kernels.org for
Intel Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1030 and Bluetooth 3.0 support.
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 550M 1GB graphics with Optimus and TV Tuner and onboard Intel Video

I wish to use TwinView to be able to get the external monitor to work.
External video ports on this are HDMI and there is a VGA dongle.
I hear that the HDMI only connects to the NVIDIA.
I do not yet know where the vga dongle connects to nor have one.

This kernel has nouveau drivers but I have loaded the nvidia driver.

I just read the stick that says I should try to use native support, so what just remove the nvidia package and the blacklisting I have added? I will still need a working xorg.conf

Thanks for the help everyone, I have added comments to my xorg.conf that will hopefully help the next person.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

The result is an incomplete boot of my Ubuntu 11.10.

Just to join knowledge and wait for some reply!

Re: Dell XPS-17 702 GT 550M init config xorg.conf help needed, blank screen

SOLUTION FOUND: at least partial

found youtube video searching nvidia no screens found.
Suggestion is to lspci and find your video card in my case 01:00:0

# lspci |grep -i VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 1246 (rev a1)

Note: I had to add the BusID line per the youtube video
vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0" (Had to add this line after checking lspci, reduce zero's)
EndSection

Status: now I can get video on my external monitor but I am not sure how to switch to the laptop display. Any suggestions there?

If it's an Optimus laptop without a hardware mux (very likely), then you can't. Without a mux, the nvidia card is simply not connected to the internal display. All you can do is run the internal display on intel graphics, then use Bumblebee/Ironhide to run specific apps on the nvidia card.

Re: Dell XPS-17 702 GT 550M init config xorg.conf help needed, blank screen

Hopefully the coming work week will bring some good knowledgeable help.
In the mean time here is what I can do.
swap in orig xorg.conf I can start x and use the internal laptop display using vesa driver.
init 3 will not close x and I have to pkill x.
I can switch over to my xorg.conf.extok file. Then I can start x and get video on my external hdmi connected monitor. x still hangs closing and needs pkill x.

I think I need an intel driver section for the optimus onboard video at PCI:0:2:0 and another Display section.
I am not sure why the internal monitor is not discovered when the ext hdmi monitor is disconnected.
Files attached.
