Looking like solid cards so far.

Let's see;

- better performing than the 6970 and 6950 respectively
- much lower power, even than the 6800 series they replace
- better performing than NV competition 570 and 560ti
- great overclock performance scaling and still using less power than a 6870 (tech report)
- solid tessellation performance
- run cool and pretty quiet, especially compared to the old 6870 reference card

This release really surprised me. I expected 6950 performance in most cases and sometimes up to 6970 in rare instances, or tessellation use. What they delivered for the 7870 was above 6970 performance on average and even enough to nip at the GTX 580's heels. When overclocked, it seems to scale better than the 580 also so it often pulls ahead of extreme OC edition 580's like the MSI lightning extreme. I expected power use to be a bit below 6800 series, but not that much.

These are seriously well rounded cards! Anyone with a 6800/460 or lower not looking to spend too much would find a great buy with one of these. Maybe the prices will go down in a few months, but seriously, the price is not all that overinflated at all IMO unlike the 7900 and 7700 series. If they came down $50 each they would be amazing deals, right now, they are just good replacements for the 6900 series with a few bonuses of better performance and much lower power use/heat. That's still pretty good for the same price IMO.

Just read the Guru3D review. Me likey. :D

Still not sold though. I bought this 5870 so cheap it's almost unfair. But I really like the 7800s, *very* solid cards it seems. Looking forward to seeing some aftermarket designs in board layout and the cooler. :)

They aren't really enough of a jump over the 5870 IMO, 5850 and 6850, maybe. In heavily tesselated apps and anything that uses over 1GB of VRAM, sure. The much lower power is also a big benefit, of course that's fairly offset by the price at this time. If these move down $50 in the next few months they'll be amazing value - of course if they do that then maybe the NV offering that forced them to do so could be the better choice.

7870 right in the sweet spot for console port gaming in 1080

It actually does better at higher res than the competition, even the 580, so I wouldn't say it's limited or best suited only to that sort of market like the 6800 series was. This is probably thanks to the 2GB VRAM and sharing the same cache setup as Tahiti.

Also for crossfire, I'd be much happier considering two of these than 6800's when they came out and everyone raved about the cfx performance... having 2GB of VRAM makes all the difference! 2x7850 could actually be a better setup than 1 x 7970 for some people.

Might get 2 7870's.

I've thought of doing the same thing. I'm gonna wait for Kepler before I make any decisions however.

Thing about it is less heat and power. But I will wait for Nvidia first.

For $700 it's a bit steep IMO. I'd think two 7850's for $500 is a damn good deal though. OC to 1GHz and probably still use less power than two 7870's and perform almost the same.

Thinking of grabbing one of these as a gift for my best friend's son. He plays a lot of Skyrim and he's using my old 5770 which just isn't up to. He games @ 1920 x 1080 and has to turn settings down to maintain a decent framerate.

Likely it'll give him slightly better performance than my 5870 while running cooler and using less electricity. Win-win. Just wanna' wait and read reviews for the cooling the different manufacturers will use. :)
