This often happens while the system is idle. First there is a kernel oops. Then shortly afterwards the system reboots.

If I'm there to see it happen the screen is corrupted with the top third going black except for rectangular patterns of pixels that are added to as I type.

Some more info:

kernel: NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 13, 0005 00000000 00009297 00001c08 0923e460 00000000
kernel: NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 32, Channel ID 00000005 intr 00040000
kernel: NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 31, Ch 00000005, engmask 00000101, intr 10000000

Is this likely to be a hardware or software problem?
