Remastered Doom 3 BFG Edition Game Coming with Stereo 3D Support

Bethesda Softworks has announced that this fall they will be releasing a remastered version of the first person shooter Doom 3 originally released in 2004. The new released will be called Doom 3 BFG Edition and will include remastered graphics as well as some new extra features, and aside from being available for PC, it will also have versions for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game console. Moreover the DOOM 3 BFG Edition will also include the original DOOM and DOOM 2 games, so you'll get to remember these classics or get a hint about how the fps gaming looked back in 1993 and 1994. I'm personally more interested in something that John Carmack mentions in the official press release about stereoscopic 3D support:
'DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release,' said John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software. 'Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.'

Now, since the original Doom 3 game uses an OpenGL-based game engine stereoscopic 3D support on PC is not an option with any of the currently available solutions for stereoscopic 3D gameplay, so we are probably not going to see stereo 3D support on the remastered version for the PC. The quote from Carmack above does mention 3D HDTV and HMD support, so you can easily conclude that he is talking about HDMI 1.4 frame packaging support and there is no point in having this on PC as it will make 1080p resolution in stereo 3D mode unplayable due to the HDMI 1.4 specs limitations for stereo 3D. However playing Doom 3 BFG Edition on a console with stereoscopic 3D support at 720p resolution should be perfectly fine, so we are most likely going to be seeing stereo 3D support only available for the console ports of the game as the PC version will still be based on OpenGL and will most likely not feature native stereoscopic 3D support. Hopefully with the nearing of the release (no exact date has been announced yet) sometime in the fall this year we'll have more information regarding the stereoscopic 3D support in the gameā?¦
