Re: Is the Video Game Industry Dying?

The video game industry isn't dying, but rather getting extremely stale. No new original ideas or stories, nothing we all haven't seen before. This has been one of my biggest pet peeves and it prevents me from buying most new games. Yeah, there are some games I will buy that are very similar to it's predecesor (CoD:MW for example) because I enjoy that concept/idea/game. But for others, I think it's hurting the industry.

I would say that methods of verification are hurting the game industry, but look at the sales. Diablo 3 is all about logging into Battle.net before playing SP but yet it sold like crazy.

I want something fresh, something new. I want something that is polished right out of the box and has the entire gaming community look at it to say "Wow, they really put their time into this one" instead of meeting a deadline. Most game devs are simply lazy, and rely on "Oh we will patch it later" and crappy DLC to make a simple buck.

I could go on and on but you get my point. It's making me less of a consumer of video games the way things are being handled today, that's for sure.

Original ideas and quality are rare in every form of entertainment. You just have to be patient and very selective... It has always been that way for me. I look forward to 5 or less games per year, but then I also replay previous games that I enjoyed.

we're at the end of the current console generation. all resources diverted to making games for next generation

Somehow I highly doubt that. ;) Even the PC side of gaming is stale IMO.

if you think PC gaming in stale, you just aren't looking in the right places.
Indie games has been keeping things rather fresh and even big names have been fairly nice this year.

If you need a breath of fresh air, grab the 2 latest indie packs: Humble Bundle 5 and/or indie royale grad bundle.

http://www.indieroyale.com/

This should give you something "different" to play, rather than Diablo 3 (rather dull if compulsive) or the Call of Duty of the season.

This.

AAA games have gotten so expensive to make that nobody is going to take any risks with them now, so the interesting stuff is going on in the indie realm.

I did buy the Humble Bundle last week and those games are fun, but the replay value is kinda low IMO. Luckily I pick up Minecraft back up every now and then.
