ia64 driver for 2.6?

Any idea when an ia64 driver will be available that will compile against the 2.6 kernel? (/me is anxiously awaiting being able to put his 900xgl back in his itanium box :afro: )

Soul-Crusher 10-08-03 03:50 PM

When the 2.6 tree is considered to be 'stable' and can lose the -test suffix. Right now not even the x86-64 and x86 nVidia drivers will, without some hacking around, install with a 2.6 kernel.

ok - 2.6 is out - and still no new release of ia64 drivers.

PLEASE!?!?

Re: ia64 driver for 2.6?

Has anyone has any success attempting to modify the IA64 1.0-5336 driver to work with the 2.6 kernel? There have not been any updates to the IA64 driver for over a year now. Both RedHat and SUSE's enterprise linux products now use the 2.6 kernel yet I have not found an accellerated OpenGL driver for Itanium for the 2.6 kernel from any manufacturer.

Are there plans to support the 2.6 kernel or is NVIDIA abandoning the Itanium platform?

For reference, I have Quadra4 980 XGL installed in a HP zx6000 and would like to purchase several more graphics cards if I can get a driver for RHEL4 that works.

Re: ia64 driver for 2.6?

There are no plans to support Linux/ia64 2.6 at this time. David Mosberger posted a patch for 1.0-5336 to the linux-ia64 mailing list earlier this year, however, please see e.g. http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linu...1490608961&w=2.

Re: ia64 driver for 2.6?

Not sure if user requests count for anything but I have 5 zx2000's and 2 zx6000's that I would like to upgrade to RedHat Enterprise Linux 4. They all have Quadro 4 980XGL cards.

I need accelerated graphics for CAD/CAE visualization.

Has anyone actually tried the mentioned patch with RHEL 4? Since I'm not a driver developer, I would prefer an actual driver vs a patch.

I'm very familiar with the nVidia driver installation process and would be willing to test a driver in development.

Re: ia64 driver for 2.6?

OK, I decided to try the patch listed above to 5336 for ia64. OS is RHEL4 Update 3. Here's what I did:
Code:

[root@wslinux ~]# cd /opt/nvidia/
[root@wslinux nvidia]# ll

[root@wslinux NVIDIA-Linux-ia64-1.0-5336-pkg1]# ./nvidia-installer

Of course the last command launches the curses installer so here is the nvidia-installer.log:

I'm 100% certain that the kernel source matches the kernel because I compiled it myself. I simply did a 'make oldconfig' against the stock .config to insure that the source tree is complete. I also booted the new kernel.

Looks like there are many depreciated function calls in the nvidia source files.

The email thread linked above references a patch for the 6629 driver which I can't find anywhere on nVidia's site.

We are very pleased with our seven HP zx2000/6000 workstations with the exception of poor graphics card driver support. Are there any ia64 experts who are willing to help with this?

Hello All,

I am again the user with same problem. Compiling nvidia driver with itanium ia64 rhel 4.8 .... any one was able to do this successfully ?

Re: ia64 driver for 2.6?

We discontinued NVIDIA Linux/ia64 graphics driver support years ago. Although it may be possible for third-parties to resurrect an old driver and make it functional on current Linux 2.6 kernels, I expect this would require a significant amount of work. Getting the user-space components to work, especially the X driver (even on very old X servers), may present an even greater challenge. In my book, it is not feasible.

I was abt to compile it using some patch for kernel 2.6. It installed also fine. I have itanium ia-64 box. There to enable the nvidia graphics I changed the primary device to be the nvidia. Now my graphics is not visible. Although it must be smaller problem. I noticed that the nvidia-xconfig didn't install with this package. Its a wonderful exe. Been using it on xw series workstations ( with default installed nvidia cards ).

Is there any such installer with this package which can generate the xorg.conf file ? How can I know my system is taking which graphics ?
