Need help on XF86Config file

I am an absolute newbie to Linux and NVIDIA.

My NEW System uses:
ASUS P4C800 E-Deluxe MB, 2.8GHz P4 800FSB HT and 1 GB PC3200 DDR400 Memory.

Video Card: Chaintech Apogee FX71 with NVIDIA GeForce FX5600 Ultra/128MB

OS: RedHat Linux 8.0, i686 kernel, build 2.4.18-14

I need to set my display to 1600x1200 at 24 or 32 bit depth.

How do I do this? How do I setup my XF86Config file to do this?

Thanks,
Ananth

Code:

        SubSection "Display"
                Depth    8
                Modes    "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth    16
                Modes    "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x748" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth    24
                Modes    "1600x1200" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "1024x748" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

The Display subsections of your XF86Config should look something similar to this. The largest resolution possible will be used by default (it will try them largest to smallest and go with the first to succeed).

Thanks LordMogul.
Couple more questions.
1. Is 32 bit depth supported on Linux? (it is in Windows XP).

2. I tried to install SuSe 8.2. I insert the CD in the drive and restart. Installation screen shows up. I hit "Install". A small screen shows up "Loading Kernel". Soon after this is done, the screen goes black for a couple of min and then the screen comes on all garbled. Where is the problem? Solution? Thanks in advance.

No, it is my understanding that XFree86 does not support 32 bit color and is the limiting factor (rather than the nvidia driver / hardware), although there are few situations where you'll be able to tell the difference without a very expensive monitor.

I do not know. I have never used SuSe and do not know anything special about their installers.

You have very new hardware however, and I would suggest using SuSe 9 for better hardware support, that is if you've decided not to use RedHat. Now, video problems like you describe are frequently caused by motherboard support options for the kernel (even the installer boots a full kernel). You may be able to disable ACPI, APM, or DMA options for the installer and see better success.
