Framebuffer on Gforce4 MX 440
I change my old TNT RIVA CARD for new Gforce4 MX 440 AGP8x 128M, my working old
system use a 1280x1024 framebufer for boot display and console, this work fine
with TNT, but at boot with new card, system said
if framebuffer is > 800x600.
Under X no problem and work fine in 1280x1024.
kernel is 2.4.20-gentoo-r7

Any Idea or Solution?
I would see that on geforce4 ti4200 also if I tried to use framebuffer and rivafb on console before X.
You could leave out all that and get 800x600 by vga=ask, vga=extended, just not vga=0x793 or such color depths.
Then for X you need the downloaded nvidia driver insmod nvidia.ko, see some of these messages.
I think it is a unsuported Graphics Card Kernel problem.
In the future, kernel.org gurus path the kernel, the Geforce4 is a popular card with low price, the error is reported for meny people.....
(sorry my bad english)
Try grabbing a newer kernel source and see what happens. I know my ti4400 supports 1024x768 by vga=792, running on the Fedora 2.4.22 kernel, so building a 2.4.22 might enable this for you. (this is not using rivafb).
if someone is interested..
i start to believe that this is a GF4MX440-agp8x problem.. it seems that the bios of a nv18 chip does return a high resolution (try: lilo -T video , sry dont know the command for grub) mabey it's because the tv-out is always enabled.. dunno.
