eh letdown why? its gonna have specs more like a computer and plenty of ram and power i dont see why its a letdown.. ps3 was a letdown with insane low memory even back then...

It just doesn't seem like a full generational leap for some reason for me. It seems more like Wii to Wii U to me for some reason - maybe because games currently look so good on the PS3, IMO.

Be positive!

At least now when they port console games to PC, it won't take as long, and will also be more compatible.

The PS4 is pretty darn close to my desktop PC. :P

I don't understand this either. Sony focused on showing games instead of the HW and some people think, that it was a letdown.

Not only did they look great and were actually running at 720p/1080p and not sub 720p like most of the games right now, but you could see the advancements in physics and scale of the whole world around. Not to mention they didn't even show all of them.

Barely keeping up with current gen PC's doesn't seem worth it to me?

Wii to Wii U was a 1 and a half generation leap since the Wii is a Gamecube and the U surpasses the 360/PS3.

By current I presume you mean top end? Fitting a cutting edge setup in a small box for under 400 would be a little difficult by anyone's standards.

In a closed environment like a console affords there are no constraints imposed by resource hungry OS's or API's. Look at what is being produced on the PS3 and 360 almost 10 years into their life cycle, it's amazing. And this time around they have really got the balance right in terms of CPU\GPU and the way it is designed to work as one big computational cluster should the dev require it is way out there! It is a pure gaming box in a way that no PC could ever be given the current technology.

Looking at the specs for the PS4 it is just a developers wet dream. I find nothing in there to be disappointed about.

See, I look at Bioshock vs Bioshock infinite, and I can see the frame rate demands are a bit too much for current consoles, but it's not the leap that PS3 was over PS2, and again, that wasn't the leap that PS2 was over PS1...

Is it just me or do the returns we get every generation seem to become limited? Consoles are good enough for most styles of gameplay and their threat is from mobile or even gaming on demand services rather than each other.

Absolutely. We're also seeing that in the PC gaming side, too. I hope that we're just pushing against a wall that we'll smash through and have hardware / APIs that just blow our minds, but I really think we've started to see diminishing returns with regards to hardware horsepower versus image quality and overall graphic realism.

This is bad news for the enthusiast and hardware markets, but great news for gamers. Take a look at sites like NVNEWS. Even before the summer blowout sale (lol, that's officially what I'm calling last summer), this site was becoming more and more of a hangout and less of a place for technical discussion. I've seen that all around the web. Yes, there are still active communities out there, but they certainly don't seem to be growing. This is because "good enough" hardware has become a commodity. You can build a really good system for cheap that plays pretty much anything with amazing graphics and very playable frame rates. The same is obviously applying to console systems looking at the Wii U and the PS4.

But, some of the best games that I've played recently haven't even been 3d or pushing the edge on graphics. I'm LOVING Mark of the Ninja. It's just fantastic. I played through both Shank games before that. And Bastion not long before that. On the other side, the wife and I DO both really like Boarderlands 2 and Dead Island. They are both fun, have a ton of depth, and look quite nice to boot.

Yay for talking about games at NVNEWS!

Ray Kurzwiel writes about how the law of diminishing returns and the law of accelerated returns are actually complimentary. All the way back to punch card machines a technology has appeared, accelerated hit a wall, only to be replaced by a new technology within a decade.

I suspect we're there with silicon. That or, in a world with finite resources that chooses to invest in yesterdays fuels rather than tomorrow's computers like the car will become 3-4% more efficient every year, leading to smaller, lighter devices year after year

The most likely result is we're heading towards the uncanny valley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

Where things get so close to real it starts makes us feel revulsion towards the character. The simpler the character, the easier it is to like. Mario = easy to like. Max Payne, takes a little more work. The cast of GTA V takes a massive budget and years of effort.

My younger sister is 15, and watches other people commentating on people driving tractors and trucks together online. Maybe as I edge closer to 30 gaming has changed, and the concentration in the gaming market is because

1) I only have time to buy and play 3 or 4 games a year
2) Kids of today like f*cking weird sh*t

Either way. Bioshock infinite looks awesome. PS4, not so much. I spend most of my time on Fifa 13.

Playstation 4 is expected to be an average performance PC at best.

The Playstation GPU is expected to have a similar power with a Radeon 78xx series card while the AMD CPU is nothing that spectacular either
