SuSE 8.2: No (OpenGL) 3D acceleration with 1.0-5328 drivers

Greetings. gurus.

I was using the -4496 release drivers until my kernel was updated, recently. After the "YOU" patch was applied to the kernel (bringing it up to V 2.4.20-102), obviously, the nVIDIA drivers required re-installing.

I downloaded the new -5328 drivers and was pleasantly surprised with the much easier installation process this time around (-4496 was a bit of a pain!)

I read the README file thoroughly and ran Sax2 as prescribed. Everything appeared to be ok; my video card (Abit Siluro GeForce 3 Ti200) was recognised, I configured my monitor, colour depth, blah, blah and ensured I did not tinker with the 3D acceleration settings.

Surprise, surprise, upon restart I did not get any 3D acceleration. :(

The nVIDIA logo pops up, as before, immediately prior to the logon screen, but my OpenGL screen savers do not take advantage of the 3D acceleration.

What gives?

I noted the comment in the README file about not enabling 3D Acceleration as it was enabled just mis-reported in Sax2, but it seems it really isn't providing any 3D acceleration -- my GL savers run dog slow in "slideshow mode" about 1fps, whereas previously under -4496, they were smooth and silky and running in excess of 25fps.

Hailp! What's the trick to getting it to work? Or do I need to revert to -4496? If the latter, is there any special sequence to make this happen or do I just re-install the -4496 drivers over the top of the -5328 version?

Regards, Rik.

Probably a bug. check /var/log/messages for an kernel oops.
If so, revert to the older driver, wait for nVidia to fix it. (or the kernel folks, might be the a kernel problem, not nvidia's fault.

Hmm, alrighty...
[checks]

Well, indeed, there are warnings:
Jan 12 19:54:30 poochzilla kernel: 0: nvidia: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 nvidia.o Kernel Module 1.0-5328 Wed Dec 17 13:54:51

el: non-GPL license - NVIDIA
Jan 12 19:54:30 poochzilla insmod: Module nvidia loaded, with warnings

However, looking back to a -4496-vintage section of the log, same message just with appropriately different feedback:
Jan 5 19:42:38 poochzilla kernel: 0: nvidia: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 nvidia.o Kernel Module 1.0-4496 Wed Jul 16 19:03:09

el: non-GPL license - NVIDIA
Jan 5 19:42:38 poochzilla insmod: Module nvidia loaded, with warnings

So, I'll just nip off and uninstall -5328 and re-install -4496 and see if things change...

Back real soon now...

*ding*

Reverted to the -4496 drivers and it's fixed.

Any of the gurus care to 'splain? Happy to help with the diagnosis.

Read this thread and had what seems to be identical problems so I did as he did and installed 4496.. working great as well

5328 is bugged some how.. ran on freshly installed suse 9.0 and GF3 Ti200

Hi,

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status tells you, if AGP is working
glxinfo tells you, if Opengl is working.
glxgears is a litte programm, ideal to test opengl.
less /var/log/XF86.0.log will show you X error messages.
dmesg will show you kernel messages.

The warnings about tainting are normal. The nvidia modul is binary only and the kernel tells that the user.

Glück Auf
Volker

I have nVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 200 and glxinfo tells me OpenGL is working but when I start an OpenGL game, he says: could not load "libGL.so.x.x".

But these files are all there!

Well, Quake3 is the only one OpenGL game which is working. all others end's up with that error message above. :( :( :(

solved

Hi,
see the topic "Very poor acceleration performance" for a solution.
Never tried this.

By the way, does Nvidia test their drivers before they release them?

energyman76b 01-17-04 08:40 PM

Hi,

I do not know. I have a SiS746FX board. No AGP driver from nvidia.. and this chipset is out for a year. I have to use Kernel AGPGART and have lockups, first time X starts with 4496, 4620 and 5328 and different minion patches.

Glück Auf,
Volker

ceasol 01-18-04 12:20 PM

I had the same problem as well, I Reverted to the -4496 drivers in my SuSE 8.2 and now I run without 3d problems. With the 5328 I had this problem

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX

I try in diferent ways to fixit but I really give up.

energyman76b 01-18-04 12:42 PM

Hi,

>(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX

means that the glx part of your driver was not installed correctly.

If you get libGL.so.XY not found errors, even though glx is installed and load correctly, make a symlink, from libGL.so.XY to libGL.so

Quix0r 01-18-04 02:13 PM

... and remove all tls directories from /usr/lib/ and /usr/X11R6/lib/

:) :) :)
