X: Hard loop on gettimeofday
System: Dual Athlon 1700+ (ASUS A7M266-D - no FastWrite support)
Mandrake Cooker (pre-10.0):
XFree86 4.4
KDE 3.1.95
Kernel 2.4.22 smp
glibc 2.3.3
nVidia 4496 and 5328

Had a nVidia TNT2, which has worked flawlessly for years. It went to the great AGP slot in the sky. Bought an FX5200 (the cheapest/slowest nVidia that I could find - I'm not a gamer).

When I run X (4.3 or 4.4), it runs beautifully (except for weird artifats on the screen whenever something - graphic window decoration, etc - is supposed to be "transparent")... at first. Then after some time, X will freeze. The mouse will continue to move, but X no longer responds. If I log in across the network, I see that X is using 99% of one of the CPUs. strace shows that it is in a hard loop on gettimeofday, interrupted by SIGALRM now and then. The only way out is to kill -9. The desktop manager will restart X, and it looks fine, but switching to a console shows complete garbage. I generally have to reboot.

The timing for this doesn't seem to be consistent - the only requirementis that "something" - mouse click, application start, something - is going on. If I start it up and walk away it runs fine.

It runs (although many features are missing) with the X "nv" driver, except for the same artifacts for "transparent" things, with no lock ups.

I've tried every combination of NvAGP, as well as disabling all modules, setting options to ignore the TV out..... I even booted with notsc as someone suggested in another thread, but then many apps and services segfaulted.

There are no errors in any of the logs, and it loads the AGP modules as specified with NvAGP.

I'm at a loss. Is this just a completely crap card? I'm thinking about E-Baying for a used TNT2, since I know that works.

Found, downloaded and installed version 4620 in hopes that the problem would go away - based on its glowing feedback..... It does fix the issues with transparent images and decorations, but still gets into the same loop.
