RH7.3, 3123, was working, now it isn't

OK, so I'm going nuts. X was working fine yesterday, then I swapped my mouse, rebooted, and it didn't.

The story, and config...

Asus A7N266-E, Athlon XP1700, 1gb mem.
RH7.3, stock kernel.
Nvidia Linux drivers, 2960 release
USB mouse

Changed my mouse back to the PS2, let kudzu do updates at boot. Checked XF86Config-4, all well. /dev/mouse correct. GPM works ok. Start X, bombs. /var/log/messages contains...

kernel: <1>Unable to handle kernel paging request at v
irtual address 003f0000

Plus lots of other debugging info (if anybody wants to see the gruesome details)

Tried the obvious, of swapping mouse back. Of course that wasn't the issue.

Today I've checked...

All the libraries are in the correct places
ld.so.conf (ldconfig ran again too)

Uninstalled 2960, installed 3123.

Now I get...

kernel: NV0: rm_init_adapter failed

And XFree86.0.log...

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVdriver kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

(Loading NVdriver manually with modprobe seems to work fine though)

I've tried the stock 3123 dist for kernel 2.4.18-3 on an Athlon, I've even tried the SRPM (does the same).

I've now ran out of ideas! Can anybody shed any light on this? It's driving me nuts, my config was working a treat until this.

BTW - No new s/w installed, with the exception of the CVS dist of Nessus. ldconfig was re run after that, but I can't see any libraries that would affect X.

please post everything, could be mem failure or something,
but without logfile that'll be just a wild guess....

Attached are the XFree logs for both 2960 and 3123 Nvidia drivers, and the output from /var/log/messages for both drivers.
